his family by a member of the Ger
man company at whose hands he
fell while fighting In the Argonne.
Corporal O. W. Fryllng waa a
member of the Twenty-eighth di
vision. Before Fryllnc sailed hie
Brother, 8. H. Fryllnc of thla elty
sent him the flag, with the requeat
tnat ne carry it Into every engage
ment. If the soldier brother csme
back alive he was to return the flag
to tne donor as a war token.
"Corporal O. W. Fryllng waa kill
ed In action in the Argonne forest
Sept. 28, 1818," read the message
his family received from tha war de
partment. The body waa returned
to thla country, but tha flag was
missing.
A few days ago S. H. Fryllng re
ceived a letter from A. Schelftele of
Oersllngen, Germany, a lieutenant In
a German regiment that fought in
the Argonne, Inclosing Corporal Fry
llng'a flag, which the American sol
dier bad placed In an envelope bear
ing his brother's address. It had
been found on the battlefield.
"I took the flag with the intention
of returning It after the war was
over, but as I was sent to the ho -pltal
myeelf, the envelope was m,j
lald until recently," wrote the far
mer German officer.
