Conecutive Gamei Fails To Kick Through Yesterday;
Pirates Are Still Leading National
WASHINGTON, June 30. (United News) Pitching one
of the most brilliant games of his long career, Walter Johnson
shut out the Athletics 7 to 0, allowing only two hits. This put
Washington at the head of the American league.
This is the first time this year, except for the first few
days of the season, that the world champions have been in
first place.
They went into the last game of the present series with
the Athletics just half a game from the top. Walter Johnson,
for all of his 18 years in the big league, pitched a game that
came within a hair of his great "no hit, no run game" with
the Boston Red Sox years ago.

Washington fans, who turned out
for the game by thousands, were as
wildly jublliant over Johnson's her
oic pitching as they were over the
return of the home team to first
place after lagging behind since the
start. Just . before he went to New
England, President Coolldge pre
sented Johnson with- the diploma
certifying him as the most valuable
player last season.
In addition to pitching his team
into first place, Johnson stopped
the remarkable': hitting streak of
Lamar, who until today, he had hit
safely 29 consecutive games.
. Pittsburgh Still Leads
The situation at the top of the
National league remained the same.
Both the Giants, and the Pirates
lost their games, thus giving the
Pittsburgh team another day as lea
gue leaders.' Brooklyn holding third
place In the league standing, also
lost, thus completing the defeat' of
the top trio by three teams with
the poorest records.
New York lost to the Braves 2
to 3. the Dodgers to the Phillies 9
to 10, and the Pirates were shut
out by Chicago, 1 to 0.
Cincinnati and St. Louis were not
scheduled to play.

News) In spite of his weak, ach
ing legs, Habe Kuth went hack
into tho lineup of the Yanks Tues
day and stayed there for nine
innings. The one-time home run
king, however, did little more
than wear a uniform anil keep a
more able nthleto out of the game.
In five times to the plate Ruth
failed to register a hit. He hit
into a' double play once, tapped
weakly to tho pitcher on his sec

to a waiting outfielder twice and
worked Howard Khmke for a base

Booth And Arnold Lead In
Individual Batting; Ten
Hits Is Average Team's
Hitting Per Game
Nearly all the Pelicans took ad
vantage of Sunday's game to fatten
their batting averages. Bert Ar
nold met with considerable success
by getting five hits In six times up.
Arnold is second only to Booth In
Individual batting. Booth, who came
here three weeks ago, has proven
himself to be a great slugger. Of
his six hits, four of them have been
for extra bags. Carroll has made
a fine showing In his few times
at bat.
Six Pelicans are batting above the
.300 mark. The team's batting as
a whole averages .287. The total
of 71 hits is a traction better than
10 hits per game on an averaee.
That should be winning ball.
Noel and Mathews have the dls
tlncllon of hilling safely In six con-
secutive games. .
The batting averages are as fni.
