messagea from Cuba sUll exceed
somewhat tha number of messages
from lbs United States to Cuba,
the tendency each year has been
(or tha meaasgea to Cuba to In
crease at lbs faater rata, so that If
tha preaent trend continues, tele
phone subscribers tn tha United
Htktea will soon make mora tele
pbon calls to Cuba than they re
ceive from Cuba.
During 1951 there was an In
ereaaa of about 15 per cent la lbs
number ot meaaages exchanged be
tween this country and Cuba orer
tha averagi number aent In 122.
Aa might be expected, tha flow of
business Is of a somewhat seasonal
nature, the average meesagaa per
representative day being much
greater In February than In July.
A large part of the bualnsss Is
between New fork City and liar
ana and. accordingly, a direct tele
phone circuit connects these two
cities. Ilualnssa to other points In
the Culled Mates Is bandied
throuxb New York or la switched
to other tang Distance Hoes at
Jacksonville or Key West, where
ibe two other circuits terminate.
About 4 per cent of the meseegeg
are with points In Cuba other than
Havana.
Telephone operators In Havana
have to be able to understand both
English and Spaqlsh. since lbs re
quests for service msy bs In either
language. The cablea to Cuba
have abown that It Is posalble (or
telephone business to be developed
between countries where different
languages prevail.
A noteworthy use of the cables
during 1)24 occurred on February
I, 1124, when Havana was connect
ed with the transcontinental line
extending from New York to Ban
Francisco, In connection with the
dinner ot the Bond Club at Chi
cago. Speeches, music, and roll
call of tha stations slong tba trans
continental line were broadcast
from aaven radio stations. Includ
ing station PWX at Havana, to a
radio audience eallmated at more
than 10,000.000 listeners.
Messages for Cuba originate In
all parts ot the United States,
some of ths messages handled dur
ing 124 having their origin aa far
west aa Portland. Ore, and Seat
tle. Wash.
The constrac.iou of the Cuban-
American cable was one ot ths
first large undertakings attempt
ed by the Bell System following
the cloae of the World War. It
was then decided thst ths time
had coma to link Cuba in the main
land by telephone cables, but the
task called for a great deal ot en
gineering aklll and Involved msny
probloms and foatures which bad
never before been attempted. In
tha drat place. It meant tba long-
I
eat stretch ot submarine telephone
cable that had aver been put Into
service.
At one place between Havana
and Key Went over the selected
route the wster Is a mile deep, and
that brought up another difficulty..
In addition to the strong current
of the gulf stream flowing around ;
tba aonlhern point ot Florida, tha
temperature ot tropical waters and ,
the peculiar tastes ot the to redo, aa
InqulaKlve insect thst Inhabits
these waters, had also to be taken
Into consideration.
After exhaustive research work
the feasibility ot tha project waa
accepted and three separate cables
were Uld. each consisting of a
single copper core made op of
central wire which Is surrounded
by live copper tapes. .Over these,
small Iron wlrea are wrapped to
provide the proper amount of In
ductance, generally referred to aa
loading." The core Is surrounded
by a sheath composed of copper
ribbons spiralled about gutta
percha and protected by steel ar
mor wire. The cablea vary In di
ameter from an Inch and a quar
ter in the dei sea length to two
and one-half Inches at the ehore
ends. " - .
Ths Long Distance telephone cir
cuits which connect with, the Cubsn '
cables are routed-down the east
coast of Florida and serosa the
Florida keys to Key West.

Harvest la nearly over In southern
Kansas, and thousands of bronsed

Riding ths rods under groaning.
lurching freight cars, with their
nrlray faces only a few Inches from
the glesmlng rails, huddled in the

and the wrath of the trainmen,
torched on the tops of the swaying
box cars, helpless prey of the whims
of J pluvlus, the army of the (olden

Nonchalantly dangling their legs
from "side door pullmans" the ad

Naturally, the more ice we sell the 1
better we like it. But that doesn't
mean we want to see you waste ice.
We want you to get the best possible
service from the ice you buy. Don't
keep your refrigerator doors open any
longer than necessary. That lets
warm air in, and makes your ice melt
faster. ' The economical way to use
ice is to keep your ice-chamber al
ways full, and the food compartment
doors closed.
