OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY OF KLAMATH FALLS
"Let. us have faith that right makes might, and
in that faith let us to the end dare to do our
duty as ice understand it" Abraham Lincoln
THE AMERICAN LEGION ALWAYS KEEPS IN STEP
The fine enterprise of the American Legion for tak
ing care of war orphans, brought to attention by its de
serving effort to raise a national endowment fund, does
not include any orphan asylums a.i part of the plan.
Instead of putting children into institutions, the le
gion will follow the more enlightened method of placing
them in private homes, in the care of those who will love
and care for them as though they were their very own.
Tins has become the modern way of solving the
heart-breaking problem of the orphan. Not so very long
ago the hardened criminal had a fate to be preferred to
that of the child whose only offense was to be without
father or mother.
Time has abolished the abuses of the orphanage.
The lives of the children have fallen into the keening of
tender-hearted men and women. But the disadvantage
of institutional life remained to single them out as rubber-stamp
exceptions to the general rule of happy child
ren with the love of parents and homes of their own.
People are learning that the love of a foster-parent
can be just as deep, just as. much a source of happiness,
as that of the natural parent. The tendency now is all
toward finding homes for children, not toward cooping
them up in institutions.
The American Legion is to be congratulated for fall
ing into step with this policy. Good luck to the legion
and success to their fund to take cs-.re of orphans and
disabled veterans.
COMPARE NEWSPAPER TO MENU
A newspaper is like a restaurant's bill of fare says
an article in a recent issue of the Englewood Times, pub
lished in Chicago. Every subscriber is not expected to
digest every article any more than everv patron is ex
pected to eat everything on the menu. But the paper,
hke the bill of fare, is planned for every man's taste.
Take what you like leave the rest; this is the motto
of both.
However, says the Times, "salacious, sensational
stuff has no place in any paper, much less in one that is
supposed to reach the homes, and unfortunately there are
some who feature this element. Every real editor does
bis best to keep his paper clean and decent, and gives all
the news his space will allow, and local papers should be
very particular in their bid for popularity not to reach
the wrong side in their moral tone, as there are too nw'nv
of the other kind in the larger city fields."

THE ROTATION
Japan is planting over r.30,000 acres of forest and
timber every year with her comparatively limited area.
In this country there are less than 40,000 acres a year of
replanting, while there are over 80,000,000 acres of de
nuded timber lands. We have a lot of things to learn yet.
