    Princeton Hits High A verage,

By United Press International
Basketball coaches dream
about days when their teams
will make 50 per cent of their
shots on a foreign court.
Princeton Coach Bill Van
Breda Kolff is no different from
the rest of his colleagues and
he experienced such an evening
New Year's Eve his team
hot 52.6 per cent. But he
wasn't smiling, because Prince
ton lost the Charlotte Invitation
al championship to seventh
ranked Davidson, 102-6H.
You can't blame Ven Breda
Kolff for that feeling of plain
frustration because Davidson
just happens to be the nation's
top team in field goal percent
age with a 57.5 murk. Tuesday
night the Wildcats did even bel
ter, hitting 2 per cent.

the Sugar Bowl. Mover before
had anyone kicked a 40-yarder,
much less a 4H and a 48 yard

Davis Voted MVP
Sportswrilers covering the
game made him an almost
unanimous choice for most vol
able player in the game.
Davis was just one of a flock
of bright lights for Alabama
Wednesday.
The Alabama defene did not
give Olc Miss a first down in
the first half, and did not budge
until the last quarter.
When Ihe game was at stake
on the Iwo-yard line, the Ala
bama defense held solidly. Tide
players recovered six fumbles
and intercepted three passes
against the seventh-ranked
team in the nation, a team that
seldom made mistakes.
Sophomore Steve Sloan was a
stand-out. He replaced Joe Na
math. Alabama's sensational
quarterback who was dismissed
from the squad early in Decem
ber. Sloan went through the
una season without completing
a pass. In the first quarter
Wednesday he completed three
and sparked the drive that set
up Davis' first field goal.
Set Fuinhlc Iteeord
Johnny Vaught and Mississip
pi have seldom experienced
such misery. The Itebels fum
bled an almost unbelievable 11
times, a Sugar Howl record.
Perry Leo Dunn, the Olc Miss
quarterback who was signed by
Hie Dallas Cowboys right after
the game, completed eight out
of 10 passes, most of them in
Ihe desperate fourth quarter.
"Wc just couldn't seem to gel
started," he said after the
game.
Hul Ole Miss looked like ils
brilliant self for several min
utes. Mississippi scored on a
Dunn pass to Larry S m i t h on
the three, and Smith ran into
the end zone for Ole Miss' lone
touchdown. Billy Carl Irwin
made the extra point.
Dunn then led another Missis
sippi march lo the two-yard-line,
hut Alabama held.
