    Neithrer Commercialism Or Conflict
Has Altered Beauty Of Bethlehem
EDITORS NOTE: This is
the third of (our dispatches
describing places Pope Paul
VI will visit on his pilgrim
age to the Holy land Jan. 4-S.
Today: Bethlehem
By RAY J. .MOLONEY
BETHLEHEM, Jordan iUPD
-eope Paul will find when he
conies here on his pilgrimage
that neither the garishness of
commercialism nor the bitter
ness of war has erased the se
rene beauty of storied Bethle
hem. The road to Bethlehem from
Jerusalem leads past the Gar
den of Gethsemane, through the
stony hills of Judea and after
a long, slow ascent reaches the
little itown of Christ's birth. It
is not the same road that JIary
and Joseph tonic on their wav
to the City of David to register
in the census decreed hy Caesar
Augustus. The original road is
now inside Israel, across the
line that divides the Holy Ijnd
between Arab and Jew.
The present road runs
through hills pitted with innum
erable caves used by Christian
hermits from the Roman times
through the .Middle Ages. Rock
tcmbs abound. But neon liglits
now wink at the traveler by
night v here once there were
only the fsrs and moon.
As Jerusalem drops from
sight Bethk'hem appears, an en
thralling image. The knowing
pilgrim, even though he will
shortly recoil at the unashamed
commercial exploitation of the
biblical story the sight of "Je
sus Christ tearooms" now
must stop for a moment.
Scene of Beauty
The eye is caught and held
by tl)e beauty of the hilly coun
try to the right and the left.
Olive trees shine silver in tlie
crisp winter air. Away to the
east, the land drops to the
Dead Sea and to the mountains
of (Moab beyond.
Bethlehem's 16.800 citizens,
alxnft 35 per cent of whom arc
Arab Christians, live among
streets and alleys as narrow as
those of Christ's day. There
seems to be no pattern to them
the great city planners of tlie
ancient world never got as far
as little Bethlehem.
Streets run off at odd angles
and the flat-roofed houses, ex
cept for those that are open
front shops, turn almost blank
Maturity Column
'Saved' Couple
Dear Ann Landers: I just
wanted to let you know you
had a hand in helping a pris-
oner Decome
rehabilitated.
I married
my husband
without know
ing he had vi
olated his pa
role. It was a
terrible shock
to me when he
was taken from our home and
had to serve 16 months in prison.
During that time I wrote to
you for moral support and guid
ance. You told me how I could
best help him and myself. I fol
lowed your advice closely. I vis
ited him 34 times and wrote
him 445 letters. One of my let
ters contained a clipping from
your column. It was your def
inition of maturity.
My husband is home now and
we are starting our marriage
again this time on the right
foot. He told me your column
on maturity gave him real in
sight into his own life and made
him realize where and why he
had failed. He read it so many
times he memorized it. I might
add that column is tattered and
worn, but he still carries it
with him.
Thank you, Ann, for helping
someone very dear to me and
God bless you. A VERY
GRATEFUL WOMAN
1 Dear Friend: Thank you for
jour generous expression of
gratitude. The most rewarding
part of this work is knowing
that I can occasionally provide
someone with solace, strength
,ir self-understanding.
Since the column your hus
band is carrying In his wallet
is now tattered and worn, 1 am
herewith re-printing my defini
tion of maturity expecially for
him.
Maturity is many things. First
It Is the ability to base a judg
ment on the Big Picture The
Long Haul. It means being able
to pass up the fun-for-the-min-ute
and select the course of ac
tion which will pay fii late.
One of the characteristics of in
fancy is the "I want it now ap
proach." Grown-up Iieoplc can
wait.
Maturity is the ability to stick
w ith a project or a situation un
til it Is finished. The adult who

grown up. Everything seems to
turn sour after awhile.
Maturity Ls the capacity to
face unpleasantness, frustration,
discomfort and defeat without
complaint or collapse. The ma.

everything his own way. He is
able to defer Ip circumstances,
to other people and to time.
Maturity is the ability to live
up to your rcsxnsibilities, and
this means being dependable. It
means keeping your word. And
dependability equates with per.
sonal integrity. Do you mean
what you say and say what
Jiiu mean?
The world is filled with peo
ple who can't be counted on.
People who never seem to come
through in the clutches. Peo
ple who break promises and
substitute alibis for perform

at all. They are confused and
disorganized. Their lives arc a
chaotic maze of unfinished busi

Maturity is the ability to
make a decision and stand by
it. Immature people spend their
lives exploring endless possi

Action requires courage. And
there Ls no maturity without

Tlie focal point for the Chris
tian visitor is of course the
manger of the Christ child. The
Church of the Nativity stands
guard on the right of the Square
of the manger. The graceful
bell tower of the Church of St.
Catherine looms over the
square. An ancient olive tree,
gnat led as only an old olive
tree can be. stands in mute tes
timony to the permanence of
Bethlehem's way of life.
Inside the Church of the .Na
tivity is the Grotto Sancto
which has been accepted by
Christians since earliest times
as the birthplace of Christ. Ori
gen wrote in 248 lA.D. that "in
Bethlehem you are shown the
cave where He was born, and
within the cave the manger
where he was wrapped in swad
dling clothes." St. Jerome made
his home here by 358 A.D.. and
it was in a cell carved out of
the rock nearby that he trans
lated the "Vulgate" version of
the Bible.
History Bloody
Like much of the Holy Land,
part cf Bethlehem's history is
written in blood and savagery.
It was garrisoned by the Philis
tines at the time of Saul and
was the early home of David.
The first historical mention of
Bethlehem is in the Amarna
texts of the 4th century B.C.,
which report of battles at the
site.
At the time of Jesus, howev
er, it was a small and relative
ly modest place. Its fame grew
with the doctrines of Christ.
The Roman Emperor Hadrian
desecrated it about 132 A D. In
531 A.D., Justinian enclosed the
town with a wail. When the Per

Land nearly a century later

Mrs. Oswald Wants To Thank Americans Via TV
TORT WORTH a'PU - Mrs.
I-ee Harvey t Marina Oswald,
widow of President Kennedy's
accused assassin, hopes to go
on national television early this
vear and thank Americans for
kindness extended to her, her
lawver said Tuesday.
Mrs. Oswald, the mother of
two, does not want to answer
questions, but simply will make
a statement, the lawyer said.
John M. Thorne, the attorney,
confirmed that the Russian-born
woman will testify this month
before the Warren Commission.
He said she is rapidly learning
English, but probably will testi

preter. Thorne also confirmed that
Lee Harvey Oswald gave his
wife a note the night before a

Public-Private Health Plan
Pushed By GOP Senators
HOLY LAND SITE One of the places that Pope Paul
will visit during his Holy Land pilgrimage is this rock at
Gethsemane. Christ is believed to have rested with his
disciples in the Garden Of Gethsemane on this rock the
night before Judas betrayed him. The rock is enshrined
in the Church of All Nations at the foot of the Mount
of Olives.

WASHINGTON iUPD Six
Republican senators are push
ing a public-private plan of
health benefits they believe will
provide a basis for ending the
congressional impasse over
medical care for the aged.
In a statement Wednesday,
the GOP senators said they
would introduce legislation in
the new session of Congress to
make full use of private Re
sources and initiative as well
as Social Security financing.
The measure is based on rec
ommendations of the National
Commission on Health Care lor
the Aged formed in lflta at the
suggestion of Sen. Jacob Javits,
It-NT.
Sponsoring the legislation with
Javits are Sens. Clifford P.
Case. H-N.J., John Sherman
Cooper. R-Ky.. Kenneth B.
Keating, R-N.Y., Thomas H.
Kuchel, R-Calif., and Margaret
Chase Smitii, R-Maine.
tien. Edwin A. Walker.
The note outlined what the
woman should do if he was ar
rested or dropped out of sight.
Thome said Mrs. Oswald kept
the note and threatened to turn
it over to police "if he ever did
such a thing again."
Thorne said Oswald told his
wife that Walker was "an ex
tremist who should be killed."
The former general was nar
rowly missed last April 10 when
a rifle shot drilled into his
home.
Thorne said Jim Marlin, in
an interview with Carl Kruend
of the Dallas Morning News,
said that Mrs. Oswald believes
her husband was mentally ill
when he allegedly shot at Walk
er and assassinated President
Kennedy.
"Mrs. Oswald was watching
television when President Ken
nedy was shot," Thorne said.
"Like millions of Americans,'
she was shocked. She told me;
she never dreamed at the time
that officers would arrest her
husband and charge him with'
the assassination."
Thorne said Mis. Oswald
"knows of tlie evidence against
her husband, but I don't know
whether she is convinced in her
mind that he pulled the trigger."
