HOLLYWOOD I UPI I Here's
a hick you've got to admire.
His real name is Hickman
Hill. He's the grandson of the
great cowboy star Tom Mix.
He is in Hollywood to make his
acting debut in a segment of
television's "Gunsmoke."
Hick (that's his nickname)
will play a cowboy, which is a
good thing because that's what
he is in real life down in
Laredo, Texas.
Hick, 19, landed in Hollywood
this week after his first and
last airplane ride. With his
adam's apple jumping up and
down like a yo-yo, Hick said
he'd never get on another plane.
"It was terrible," he said,
scuffing his cowboy boots
against the table leg in fancy
Scandia Restaurant. "We were
up 31,000 feet and going 500
miles an hour. That's too high
and fast for me. I'm going
back by train."

a fine actor. This opportunity
to appear on television has
ignited within Hick the hope of
becoming an actor himself.
Sitting in the restaurant, his
stetson stampeder hat at his
side, young Hick looked every
inch a cowboy.
"I'd like to become an actor
and wear western clothes, just
like we do down home," Hick
said. "Ranching is a lot of fun
but it sure isn't anything like
you see in movies and TV.
"Out on the ranch we don't
carry no guns or guitars, and
there's no romance like gallop
ing along on your pony and rid
ing off with a girl. When I
meet up with a girl 1 like to be
afoot."
When Hick was approached
for his small role a letter had
to be dispatched to the ranch.
There is no telephone.
"The nearest phone is 12
miles away," Hick explained.
"But we don't miss it much,
lt d cost us $500 a mile to get
a telephone strung out to us.
And I don't know of anybody
worth hearing from at those
prices."

In Broadway
NEW YORK (L'PI)-A quar
ter of a century ago on an
evening in late all, a girl who
had never been on Broadway
before stood on stage wrapped
in lynx jacket and little else
and sang a song called "My
Heart Belongs to Daddy."
The song stopped the show
and turned into an overnight
Cinderella the girl from Wea
therford, Tex. who sang it in
"Leave It to Me."
For Mary Martin, that night
started a long love affair with
Broadway and one which prom
ises to continue for some time
to come.
"No, I have no plans to re
tire," said Miss Martin, a
grandmother of two with a
third on the way.
"Only to retreat." said the
star whose luster gues on un
dimmed. "Richard and I are seriously
considering not doing anything
for a couple of years after
'Jennie,' " she said. "That's our
dream anyway, just to go to
our farm in Brazil and catch
up. That's the story of my
life. I've never had time to
catch up."
"But I know what'll happen,"
she smiled. "Someone will ask
us to read a script and we
won't be able to resist..."
Miss Martin's current starring
vehicle is "Jennie." a musical
based on the early life of the
actress Laurctte Taylor. She
has a run of play contract.
Her husband of 22 years is
Richard Haliiday, who also is
her manager and a producer in
his own right. That farm she
mentioned is about 50 miles
from Brasilia, Brazil's capital
city.
"I haven't the vaguest idea
how many acres,", said Miss
Martin. "We keep saying it's
so far away, we ought to sell.

Much of tlie furniture was

his workshop. Woodworking was
his hobby until three weeks af
ter the "Hazel" show made its
debut. A power saw almost lop
ped off one of his fingers, so
Don has spent less time playing
cabinetmaker.
Don is particularly proud of
his den. Everything in it relates
to railroad lore. His father was
a railroad engineer.
The coffee table is made up
of old railroad tics fastened to
a length of track. It took tlie
actor a year to bleach the tics
and bolt them together.
The DeFore clan is a large
one. The children are Penny,

lives at a sorority house at tlie
University of Southern Califor
nia, but the others swarm all
over the place.
A recent development in fam
ily enterprise has Mrs. DeFore
(Marion) in a dither. Sons Da
vid and Ronald are raising w hite
mice and rats in the garage.
"They hjpe to set up a busi
ness, selling them to clinics and
hospitals," DeFore sighs, "but
I don't know."
Because Georgo Baxter Is
supposed to live in the east, De
Fore finds it necessary to have
two complete wardrobes. In the
sei ics he wears tab collars and
a Homburg with trim. Ivy
League suits. His own clothes
are r.norc casual.
"Around the house I'm a
slacks and sports shirt man,"
he says.
Don's life is easier than many
a series star. Most of the time
he works only four days a
week. His hours are from 8
a.m. lo 6 p.m. He's home for
dinner every night and prefers
steaks, roasts and Norwegian
dishes, vhich Marion prepares.
The DcFores entertain often.
Their friends are a cross sec
tion of shew business and just
plain folks. In addition to act
ing, DeFore has cvcral outsido
business interests, including a
restaurant and a mercantilo
concern.
This year he bought half an
acre of land on Lake Millcrton
near Fresno, Calif., as a sum
mer vacation hangout for the
family.
This spring a cottage will be
built on the site for year-round
sports activities swimming,

VERONICA, THEN AND NOW: For some, stardom, once
achieved, is a never-fading element. Veronica Lake, top
photo, returned to the theater with her popularity vir
tually unscathed by the passing years. In loner photo she
spoofs herself as she was in her earlier star days.
Veronica Lake Proves
Real Stardom Is Lasting
(Last of Three Dispatches.)
Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
NEW YORK (NEAi Until
tlie fall of 13, it had been five
years since Veronica Lake had
made a public appearance. And
it was 13 years since her last
movie.
But the public never forgot
tlie liny beauty with the slim
figure and cascading platinum
hair. Far from it. She says
that she was continually recog
nized wherever she went, even
though time had made the in
evitable changes in her lovely
face.
Her case is worth examining,
for she was perhaps tlie last
person to get the Grade A
buildup in Hollywood. And she
is proof that full-fledged star
dom appears to be lasting. It's
like an appendicitis scar; onco
you acquire it, its yours for
ever. "I was an overnight star,"
Miss Lake says. "I never had
to struggle. After a very few
bit parts, I did 'I W a n t e d
Wings' with William Holdcn. 1
was a star the day that picture
was released."
Eventually, she grew tired of
the artificial life thai, she says.
she was forced to live.
"I quit Hollywood," she says,
"when I realized I had to
choose between being a human
being and one of the Jiving
dead. I chose being a human
being. I haven't been in the
state of California since."
Actually, while Miss Lake
quit stardom, stardom didn't quit
her. She says that she continu
ally had to turn down offers to
rclurn. She had to sign auto
graphs wherever she went.
Over the past few years, the
urge to return to acting has

grown in her gradually. But she
admits she was "scared." One
day young off-Broadway produc
er Arthur Whitelaw called her.
"Ho needed a replacement for
his hit revival of "Best Foot
Forward." He asked her what
she looked like these days. .
"I'm 40," said Miss Lake,
with her usual candor, "but. in
a good light I look a few years
younger." :
The result of tlie conversa
tion was that Miss Lake re
turned to show business in
"Best Foot Forward" and loved
it.
"Now that the hinges are
oiled," she says, "I don't want
them to get rusty again."
The box office reflected the
still-potent drawing ability of
Miss Lake. Even though she is
now a grandmother "and proud
of it.

mother. I was built something
like a boy before. No more."
Such are the stars who made
it years ago in the era when
the silver screen was pure gold.
The stars of today don't have
the same slaying power.
