the comedienne has grown ac

you ever hear of a movie star
losing a real life fist fight?
Odds are you haven't.
But actor Rod Taylor cheer
fully admits he chose a guy
during an argument. Two
punches were thrown. Rod
caught them both on the kisser
and was quickly counted out.
His admission makes Taylor
one of a kind. When a star
does collect a mouse on his eye
or loses a couple of teeth he
inevitably explains that he
was attacked by a hand of
cavemen, or perhaps a howling
mob of Russian spies.
In most cases the screen
hero is decked by a guy half
his size. And seldom, if ever,
does his inglorious defeat come
lo light.
"1 don't mind admitting I
was whipped," Taylor grinned
over a noonday cocktail. "The
fight lasted only 40 seconds
and I didn't land a glove on
the guy.
"It happened this way: An
Australian buddy and 1 were
driving dow n a main street near
Beverly Hills the other day
when we stopped behind an
other car for a red light. The
guy ahead of us got out of his
car and told me I'd rammed
into his fender.
'I told him he was crazy
and that he'd better shove off.
He suggested we pull around
the corner and have it out."
According to Taylor, the com
batants returned to their cars
and drove into a quiet side
street. When they parked Taylor
noticed that two men jumped
from the other car.

came, up to me and I poked

divorcee. But off-streen she is
married lo John Dodds. a New
York literary agent, who fig
ured it would he simpler for
Vivian to commute to Holly
wood than for him to catch a
plane every morning for New
York. As it is, John is 35 miles
from his office hack East.
Every weekend with a few
exceptions Vivian leaves lot
us land (or suburban Connecti
cut. "After we film the show on
my finger into his chest and
said, 'if jou want to go, let's
get out in the street.' I was
showing off for my friend from
Australia who slaved in the
car."
Rod said his friend was an
avid fan of "Hong Kong." the
video series in which Taylor
played a rough and ready re
porter who could whip his
weight in wild cats.
"Even 1 thought my antagon
ist should be afraid of my
image in 'Hong Kong,' " Taylor
laughed. "I had brainwashed
myself into believing I couldn't
get whipped."
At 175 pounds, Taylor is all
muscle. His broken nose is
testimony to his days as an
amateur middleweight boxer in
his native Australia.
"But the other guy wasn't
impressed," said Rod.
"Before anything could hap
pen the second man jumped
from the car and knocked me
down with one punch. Then he
punched out my Australian
friend. When I got up the big
guy belted me right in the
forehead and knocked me down
again.
"By the time I regained my
feet they had piled into their
car and taken off.
"My buddy was disgruntled
and amazed. Holding a sore
ear, he told me I'd gone Holly
wood and couldn't beat an egg.
"From now on I'm not get
ting out of the car. I'll live in
the past and talk my way out
of trouble. Anyhow, it's a known
fact that actors are lovers, not
fighters."
At his birth, Maximilian, em
peror of Mexico, held the rank

that the secret of the declining
brilliance of stars lies in psy
chology. They reason that in the en
tertainment world of today tele
vision is king. And television
has yet lo create and perhaps
cannot create a major, lasting
star of the first magnitude.
One possible reason for this
is the psychological approach.
You, the audience, sitting at
home are bigger than the
sen en on which you watch tel
evision performers. When you
used to worship movie actors,
you watched them on a screen
which dominated you.
You could look up to those
movie idols as beings larger
than life, a kind of breed of
gods. But you don't have that
feeling toward the little people
who come into the box in the
living room.

home as "casual elegance." It
is a mixture of furniture from
Vivian's previous hnmse in Hol
lywood and John's home in San
Francisco.

memory very quickly.
Think of today's greatest
stars. You'll probably have a
list including such names as
Judy Garland. Danny Kaye,

by television. The closest is
Miss Ball, who was a movie
star before television came
along and made her an even
bigger star.
Television has created such

Johnny Carson, Steve Allen, Sid

hardly a group which threatens
lo shake the heavens.
Today's movies have changed
in star-making capability. Be
cause of the competition from
television, they must be belter
than before to show prolit.
They must have a solid story;
if it's an epic, so much the
better. It seems to matter little
who is in it.

Dodds are childless, but they
are raising Himalayan cats.

Vivian's poodle. Boolie. has
logged as many transcontinent
kal miles as any pooch in the
country. He flies back and forth
between work and home every
weekend with his mistress.
Headquarters for Ixiry's co
star in Hollywood is the Cha
teau Marmont. a flossy hotel
apartment house wfclch caters
to performers, especially visit
ing stars from Europe. But to
Vivian it's just a place to hang
her hat. After a day at the
studio slie fixes herself a snack
and goes right to bed.
' She does keep two wardrobes,
however.
' "I never know which sweater
or dress is where." she says.
"It's really bad during tne wint
er because I get on the plane
in New York wearing a heavy
suit and arrive in I.os Angeles
in RO-degree weather.
"Or. I wear a light dress on
the plane from Hollywood and
freeze to death when we arrive
in New York."
Green Thumb
Vivian's free time in Connect
icut is devoted to gardening,
raising an old fashioned flower
garden. She reads a great deal,
too, inasmuch as John's work
requires him to read endless
manuscripts at home.
While Vivian rarely entertains

Last spring when Mrs. Smith

was expecting a baby th pro

they would either drop her
character from the show for a
while or capitalize on her con
dition and add a baby to the
cast.
"After tho baby arrived Joey
was on the set one day talking
to the producers," Abbey re
calls. "He said we'd have to
start looking for a baby right
away to play our TV child.
"I said, 'What's wrong with
Matthew?' They looked at me
kind of shocked, and then
aprocd to hire my baby."
The proper papers were
signed, without Matthew's sig
nature, and before the little guy
could object, his .loafing days
were over.
"Five weeks after Matthew
was born we resumed shooting
the show," Abbey says, not
without a touch of pride. "It
didn't give me much time to
lose all the weight I had gained
but 1 made it,

"Malt is an important part
of the series now, but he Is
talked about more than he is
seen. Restrictions and limita
tions for working babies are
very strict. For instance he can
he on camera only SO seconds
at a time.
"The law is followed to tho
letter, so he actually works
only about an hour and a half
every five or six weeks. We get

on working days. Instead, he

dio chauffeur. He is accompan
ied by a registered nurse and
a welfare worker.
Undergoes Examination
The entourage is driven to
downtown Los Angeles where
Matthew undergoes a complete
physical examination, which
most stars never find necessary
before a day's work. Then he
is delivered to the studio, Desi
lu, where he earns $25 a day.
"We use a doll for a stand
in," said Abbey. "And you can
bet it doesn't take much effort
for me to portray motherly
love when Matthew is in the
scene.
"When he's not working Mat
thew spends two days a week
with me at the studio. On those
days I can bring him in my
self. He stays in the dressing
room and between scenes I
wheel him around the lot show
ing him off to the people on
other shows. He loves it.
"The nicest part of It Is that
I'm having all the film that is
taken of him for the show made
Into home movies so that when
he gets older Matthew can see
what a fine actor he was at
five months."
