RARE FIND A complete set of the plays of Shakspere
(note spelling I, in 46 paper-backed volumes, has been
acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Buck of Route 3, Box 1068,
Wocus. The unusual collection was sold only to those who
subscribed to the series. Each issue contains one steel
engraving to illustrate the play. Many of the pages are
uncut and have never been read. The cover edges are
mutilated. There is-io date of publication on any volume.
Engravers and publishing experts believe the series to be
possibly 75 years to a century old. The books were found
in a box of other items, auctioned to the public in San
Francisco.

Klamath Falls Couple Owns
Rare Shakspere Volumes

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Buck of
Klamath Falls are owners of
unusual volumes of Shak
spere's plays, the comedies, the
tragedies, and the histories that
the master playwright wrote in
the 15th and 16th centuries. The
46 volumes, each illustrated
with one handsome, full page
steel engraving, were published
by Charles Knight, who also
wrote wordy comments and
comparisons for each play.
Tlie steel engravings, said by
professionals to be of the finest
quality, are by Cope, Leslie,
Macli.se. Ward, Frith. Marks
and others, names unfamiliar
to this generation.
Stele engravings to illustrate
magazine articles have not
been used, present day engrav
ers say, for many years. Some
persons who have seen the is
sues, which are 11 by 15 inches
with beautifully illustrated or
ange covers, think the set is
from three quarters to a cen
tury old.
There is no identifying date
on any one cf tlie copies. Jlany
of the pages are uncut.
Knight sold the bocks to
"subscribers only" at 50 cents
per copy The paper is of un
usual quality, and the type ui-ed
is of another era. The printers
were Virtue & Yorston of 12
Dey Street. New York.
The publisher, in his introduc
tory comments, gave dates of
the first plays from the quill
len of the actor and playwright,
poet and dramatist who was
baptized in England April 26,
1564. He notes similarities to
other plays of earlier dates . . .
as in "Taming of the Shrew,"
where he compares passages to
another writing. "The History
of Alphonsus, King of Aragon,"
credited to a Robert Greene,
w ho accused William Shakspere
af plagiarism.
Tlie texts of all the plays are
complete. The type is bold and
clean, cast especially for these
works. Each subscriber was
pledged to accept the full set of
46 copies.
In a foreword, the publisher

English language is spoken, can
be said to be furnished in its
truest sense, without a copy of
Shakspere on its shelves.
"Shakspere is a literature in
himself. There is scarcely any
human tliought which cannot
meet with a full and perfect
echo in his writings."
While steel engravings cf the
type used have not been used
for many years, engravings are
almost as old as man, who first
cut stone or horn in symbols,
even before history was first
recorded. Eventually men found
that metals, too, could be
etched and the engravings re
produced on other surfaces. Al
brecht Durer and Andrea iMon
tegna were engravers of met
al during the period when
Shakspere was writing his fa
mous plays.
No original manuscripts from
Shakspere's pen are known to
have survived.
Although he may have been
charged with plagiarism, and
although it may be true, his
use of words, said to be his
own, were truly word pictures
as "I know a bank whereon

grows." Know which play the
quote comes from? We don't.
