! Chimpanzee Kidneys
Transferred To Man
Here it is! Klamath's Greatest IFVe-Christmas
NEW ORLEANS IVPV
DocW'orlcfr Jefferson Davis,
with a pair of chimpanzee kid
neys miraculously hooked into
his ailing system, prepared to
return home today for a new
life owed to medical science.
Davis, 44. got his life-saying
kidneys six weeks ago. He said
today he feeks "like a man who
hasn't been sick a day in his
life."
Drugs i4 X-rays were "in
ning a second part of (lie bat
tle, against the tendency of the
human body to reject ail for
eign objccls, including healthy
kidneys. By medication, doc
tors said it appeared the trans
plant was working despite this
tendency-
"At tliis time," Dr. Keith
Reemtsma, a surgical spokes
man, said, "it appears the re
jection mechanism of the body
has been overcome."
Remnd In History
Davis' operation was (he sec
ond such surgery in history.
A 12-member team of Tulane
University sungeons performed
the operation Nov. 5. Hie first
operation, performed on a 32-year-old
unidentified woman,
as on Oct. 8. The kidneys in
this case from a rhesus mon
key failed and had to be re
! mow). She died tw days later
from her original kidney dis
ease. But in the woman's case,
doctors said, anti-rejection
drugs (ailed.
Jleemtsma explained the
drugs had been used in human-to-human
kidney transplants.
He said there was no way of
knowing how long the kidneys
would function in Davis or
when the patient's system
might reject the transplanted
organs.
Davis Feels Well
"I can't feel any better than
tliat," Davis told ncmcn
Tuesday. "I fee! better than I
have for five years. 1 feel like
a man who hasn't been sick a
day in his life."
Asked why he agreed to the
operation, he said the doctor
told him "I couldn't live with
what I've got. J had no choice.
1 want to outlive you all. I jut
want to survive."
Reemtsma said tlie main sig
nificance of the case was that
the special drugs and X-ray
treatments apparently over
came, the body 's natural tenden
cy to reject foreign tissue.
