South's reason for his one no
trump rebid was that he
wanted to show that his hand
was minimum in high cards for
an opening bid. This reason is
frequently given for such bids,
but it is not a good one.
It is much more important to
show your distribution and hand
pattern than it is to get across
the message that you have
opened a minimum. Of course,
a no-trump rebid does tell part
ner that you have a minimum
hand, but it is more important
that you also tell him that your
hand is suitable for no-trump
play.
1 could have still saved things
had I bid either three diamonds
or three hearts as my second
bid, but I did have 4-3-3-3 dis
tribution and honors in each
suit, It seemed that a no-trump
raise was indicated and 1 went
right to game.
Tilings started out nicely. My
jack of clubs held the first trick
and my partner promptly led
a heart toward his hand. Had
East played low we would have
had nine tricks, but East hopped
ngnt up wiui tne ace and 1 e d
the five of spades to his part
ner's ace. Back came the ten
of spades and we were down
two.
Even three no . trump bid
and made would not have been
any good from a duplicate
standpoint. Every other South
played four hearts and made
five.
Had South just rebid two dia
monds we would have run with
the pack. I would have jumped
to three hearts and he would
have continued to four.

Will Steal $520 Million

The losses w ill be carried out
of supermarkets in women's
purses, coats, umbrellas and
pockets, said Norman M. Kiv
en, president of Norman Indus
tries, manufacturers of convex,
wide-angle mirrors and other
devices to discourage shop
lifting. A loss of $3 may not seem
like much but overhead and
other operating costs demand
that the food merchant ring up
about $35 in additional sales be
fore he can break even on the
loss, Kiven said.
Added up, these losses cost
the grocery industry more than
$300 million last year, enough to
feed San Francisco, Calif., for
a full year, according to an in
dustry estimate.

Kiven said that approximately
25 per cent of all the year's
stealing occurs during the
Christmas holiday season. He
said various estimates show
that retaileri will lose more
than $2 billion to pilferers this
year, more than (lie cost of all

"We are living in a nation of
thieves," Kiven said. "It's not
uncommon for youngsters to

when a child sees a parent or
friend switch a price label to
pay the lower figure or conceal
merchandise that should be
changed, it's natural that the
