IN TRAINING Two young women, both in nurse's
training at Good Samaritan Hospital, Portland, and
roommates, are in Klamath Falls for orientation in field

'Drive, was presented with a scholarship from the Klam
lath Falls Soroptimist Club when she entered training. She
will qraduate in nine months. Mary Reynolds is a Portland
.'girl, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hampton, Mil
waukie, Ore. While here they visited schools, homes, the
sanitation department and worked with mental health
personnel.

friend, had written him, urging
him to return to this country
and vie for the nomination.

Lodsc wrote from Saigon,
saying, "I am not a candidate
and, therefore, cannot give you
such a statement. In fact, were

me in an extremely false posi
tion. Therefore, I must object.
"While I am naturally comp

I have no intention of running

Decisions

Civil Aeronautics Board iCABi
announced Tuesday it will re
view the initial decisions of two
examiners in separate cases in
volving western air routes.
In one, the examiner recom
mended that a carrier West
Coast Airlines be granted au
thority to operate nonstop ser
vice between Sjxjkane and Se
attle, and Spokane and Port
land, on a nonsubsidy basis.
The same examiner also
awarded United Air Lines per
mission to provide improved
service between Sj)okane and
California points, Boise, Salt
Lake City and Denver.
The second case involved an
examiner's initial decision per
mitting West Coast to delete
nine cities from its routes on
the basis of the CAB's "use-it-or-losc-it"
policy.
This recommendation would
have given the airline authority
to drop four cities which it is
authorized to serve hut does not

Ore.; Ogden, Utah, and
Omak and Whidbey Island,
Wash. West Coast also would

school students from every stale
and the District of Columbia
have been selected to partici
pate in a nonpartisan internship
here next month to see first
hand the workings of the feder
al government and the Senate,
it was announced Tuesday.
Two students from each state
and the district will take part
in the Senate Youth Program,
sponsored by a $70,000 grant
from the William Randolph
Hearst Foundation.
The students will visit their
senators' offices and will meet
with Senate leaders, cabinet
memlxrs and high-ranking ad
ministration and political fig
ures during the Jan. 27-Feb. 1
internship.
Their agenda, arranged by
the American Political Science
Foundation, also will include a
special tour through the White
House and a possible meeting
with President Johnson.
The student program was es
tablished by Senate resolution
last year.
Among the students selected
to participate in the program
were:
Oregon: Paul Graves, Sunset
High, Portland; Trudy Lewis,
Ashland Senior High, Ashland.
Idaho: Great Kails and Kalis
pell, Mont., and Olympia, Wash,

tional Air Lines DC8 flying only

can 707 just before it fell in
flames at Klkton, Md., Sunday
night, killing all 81 aboard.
The Federal Aviation Agency
(FAAi, which released the tape
recording containing what pre
sumably was the Pan Am pi
lot's final communication to the
Philadelphia approach control

214 the plane that crashed.
After the control center first
heard "Clipper 214. . .out of
control. . .down lor herel we
go," it immediately asked:
"Clipper 214, were you call
ing Philadelphia?"
A voice calmly answered:
"Clipper 214. . .going down in
flames."
Both the "out of control"
message and the "down in
flames" cry. the source told
UPI, actually were flashed in
stead by one of the pilots on
National Flight 16 which was in
a holding pattern over New

was "ready to go" meaning
he was ready to land any time
he received permission.
"Clipper 214, stay in pat
tern." the center replied.
"Roger, no hurry," was the
answer and the last positive
communication received from
Klight 214.
Presumably, the CAB first
learned that the final message
probably came from another
plane when investigators ques
tioned the National pilots. Their
testimony may be the most vi
tal of all in the solution of the
tragedy, for they apparently
were the most reliable and clos
est eyewitnesses lo the 7tT7's
death throes. There was no in-
diation what they told ine
CAB.
Nor was there anv immediate
explanation how the National
crew knew that the flaming jet
below them was Pan American
Klight 214. It was assumed that
the National pilots were aware
that 214 was the aircraft below
them in the holding pattern
through previous communica
tions on a radio frequency
