Kentucky Returns As A
Basketball Power With

Kentucky is back as, a nation
al basketball power in case
no one noticed that they were
away.
One man who did notice is
Adolph Hupp, the Kentucky
coach who has compiled a fan
tastic 83.6 winning percentage
in his 3.1 years at Lexington.
The "Baron of the Blue Grass"
suffered through a "dismal"
lfi-9 season last year, the worst
in his career, and uncharacter
istically declared he was going
into this season with "possibly
the poorest outlook for a win
ning season since I have been
coaching."
But the Wildcats appear to be
heading back to the top after
disposing of strong North Caro
lina Monday night, 100-80, at
Lexinpton. Kentucky, ranked
seventh in the nation in the lat
est United Press International
poll, now has won all four of
its games this year, all by sub
stantial margins.
Burke Wins
Voit Award
LOS ANGELES (UPH - All
America end Vein Burke of
Oregon State today was named
the winner of the W. J. Voit
memorial t r o p h y as the out
standing collegiate football play
er on the Pacific Coast.
In balloting conducted among
Pacific Coast sports editors and
broadcasters, Burke beat out
Mel Renfrn of Oregon by eight
points, both receiving seven first
place voles.
This was the second straight
year in which an Oregon State
football star has been named (or
the Voit award presented annu
ally since 1!)"1 in memory of
West Coast Sportsman W. J.
Voit. Last year Heisman Award
winner Terry Baker was the re

which accompanied it.

poly guy was pitching because
he always did it tlx hard way.
There would be thr ee men on,
nobody out and the count 3-2.
Up in the booth, the radio an
nouncer would be saying:
"Roses are red, violets are
blue; Barrett's pitching, it's
three and two."
Then "Kewpie Dick" Barrett,
grinning, would turn loose that
big ourve ball. The batter would
swing and mifs. thump the bat
"He has springs for legs. He
was our top rebounder last
year." Groenveld advises.
The Huskies' veteran height is
in one-year letterman Larry
Conner at center and standing
6-0. And at the oilier forward is
one-year veteran Marlin Barnes
at 5-8. Both Banes and Connor
are juniors.
Figured to see action is junior
Jack Cahan standing 6-3, with
junior varsity experience a
junior Jim Alerilees at 6-1 and
both center candidates.
Three other juniors figured in
the Merrill plans are Larry
Kurtz (6-0i at forward, Rocky
Liskey (5-9) at guard and Bob
Merrilees (5-81 guard.
The Husky mentor welcomed
a good turnout of 34 candidates
this year, with the aforemen
tioned five lettermen.

Dodgers set Iwo records and
won or shared four individual
titles in 1963 en route to becom
ing the National League's most
valuable player and the major
leagues' pitcher of the year.
Koufax' all-around perform
ance was the most glittering of
a "pitchers' season" a ses
sion in which five NL pitchers
won 20 games and five had 200
or more sliikeouts. It also over
shadowed the magnificent re
lief pitching of teammate Ron
Perranoski, whose .842 won-lost
percentage was tops in that de
partment. Koufax set a single-seainn
league mark of 306 strikeouts
and set a record for left-handers
by pitching II shutouts, in
addition to winning the earned
run average title with 1.88 and
sharing the lead in victories
with 25. He is the first NL
pitcher since Bucky Walters in
1939-40 to win two consecutive
ERA titles.
The league's other 20-game
winners were Juan Marichal of
the San Francisco Giants, 25-8,
Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee
Braves and Jim Maloney of the
Cincinnati Reds, 23-7 each, and
Dick Ellsworth of the Chicago
Cubs. 22-10. Spahn's 20-win sea
son was Ihc 1.1th of his career
and Ellsworth is the first Cub
20-game winner since I!t4!i.
