- Gheller said today his fire in
vestigators have not been able
to determine an exact cause of
Saturday night's fire tihat do
" stroyed the KUuigson lumber
mill, but said it may have been
a spark from a cutting torch.
Workmen had been removing
equipment from the mill and
Gheller said a spark from a
cutting torch may have smoul
dered and then flared up Sat
urday night.
Firemen were hampered In
their efforts to subdue the blaze
because of a lack of water. The
mill's private water supply was
not available because Die pumps
were inoperative. City water
was brought in by a single line
laid a quarter of a mile to South
Sixth Street.

charged with the passing of two
worthless checks.
Police said Ellis walked into
the U.S. National Bank here
at 11:15 Monday morning and
presented a check made out to
him for $45. It was signed with
the name "John L. Garfield''
and was drawn on the Bank of
America in Sacramento.
Tile check was honored and
the money paid.
But, police reported. Ellis re
turned to the bank at 2:30 p.m.
and presented anotlicr check,
this time in the amount of $25
but otherwise similar to the ori
ginal check.
This time it wasn't quite k)
easy.
A bank clerk recognized liim
as a man w ith whom some trou
ble had been experienced in the
past. A bank officer asked El
lis to wait while lie called the
Bank of America in Sacramen
to. Ellis told dim, however, that
he would have to step outside
to talk to someone.
Tlic bank officer discovered
that tlicre was no account un
der the name "John h. Gar
field," but Ellis hadn't returned,
so police were called.
Officers arrested Ellis in a
downtown hotel at 7:30 Mon
day evening and charged him
with obtaining money and prop
erty by false pretenses.
Police said Ellis admitted
writing the bad checks on
blanks he had found in Sacramento.

Arraigned
Tliree persons indicted by the
grand jury last week were ar
raigned in Judge Donald A. W.
Piper's circuit court Monday.
Fred Puckctl, charged with
failure to support a child, and
Willa Claire Riley, charged with
obtaining money and property
by false pretenses, will submit
their pleas to the charges Wed
nesday. Wilbur Harrington, charged
with the burglary of Karl's Shoe
Store, will plead lo the charge
Dec. Hi.
Puckctl was one of the per
sons named on a secret indict
ment by the grand jury, lie was
arrested in California and re
turned to Klamath Falls lo (ace
the charge.
Mrs. Hilcy was also named
in a secret indictment with her
husband, Maurice Itlley, who is
being held in Josephine County
on a similar charge.

Agent Honored For Efforts

was honored today for showing
"exceptional bravery" when he
threw himself in front of Presi
dent Kennedy and his wile at

Dallas.
Mrs. Kennedy, her lips pursed
and her eyes glistening slight
ly, was among those on hand to
hear Treasury Secretary Doug
las Dillon read the citation at
a ceremony today.
Dillon said that Hill's conduct
at Dallas during "this dastard
ly alfair added new luslcr to
the traditions of the Secret
Service."
The citation said that the 31-year-old
Secret Service man
jumped from his car when he
heard the gunfire, climbed on
the President's moving limou
sine "and shielded the Presi
dent and Mrs. Kennedy with
his own body." '
"This extraordinary courage
and heroic effort in the face of
maximum danger reflect great
credit on the United Slates of
America, which can produce
such men," the citation added.

For Threat
