The San Francisco Forty Nincrs
lost (he hall same, and maybe
coach Jack Christiansen's job,
too, but they won the right to
pick first today in the National
Football League draft.
The Forty Nincrs, making
enough mistakes to lose two
games, bowed to the Los An
geles Hams, 21-17, Sunday at
Keznr Stadium. It was their
10th loss of the season in 12
games and sixth in eight games
since Christiansen replaced Red
Hickcy as coach. The setback
also gave San Francisco the
worst record in the NFL today
and the automatic first choice
in the annual draft of college
players.
There was no mistake that
Christiansen was disappointed

back," said Christiansen, "and
some linemen and some defen
sive backs." The way he lin
gered on quarterback seemed
to indicate he was more than
just fed up with the men who
have been filling the spot this
year.

basketball member after five
years in exile following the
demise of the old Pacific Coast
Conference.
But the green crew which
staggered through a 5-20 record
last year will have to give evi
dence that it is ready for the
better competition this time
around if Cougar hoop fortunes
are to rise.
Coach Marv Harshman wel
comed back five of his top six
scorers from the 1962-63 squad
and has 10 men from which to
choose his starting contingent.
About the only man sure of
a job is 6-1 playmakcr Byron
Vadsct, who led all scorers last
season with 385 pants and a

Ted Werner. 6-8 junior center,
is being pushed by 6-5, 190

Tittle's winning 17-yard touch
down pass to Del Sliofner in the
New York Giants' 34-27 triumph
over the Dallas Cowboys gave
Parilli connected on a 44-yard
scoring pass to halfback Larry
Garron to tic Buffalo at 7-7 in
the third period and then put the
Patriots ahead by scoring on a
two-yard keeper play. Gino Cap
peletti added an insurance field
goal from the 43-yard line in
the fourth quarter.
Cookie Gilchrist climaxed an
80-yard Bill drive in the second

The Huskies earned the right
to meet Illinois in the annual
New Year's Day classic by de
feating Washington State 16-0
here Saturday to wrap up the
Big Six Conference title.

Celebrated
SEATTLE (UPD-Rose Bowl

nearly 500 University of Wash
ington students and caused a
demonstration which took two
hours to quell. f
Shortly after word came that
Washington was going to tlie
Rose Bowl, students began pour
ing into the streets of Greek
Row, the fraternity sorority
house area near the campus.
School songs, shouts and
blasts from horns filled the air
then smoke.
A bonfire in the middle of the
street blazed brightly for over
an hour while students threw
mattresses, homecoming signs,
trees and traffic signs into it.
Firemen were unable to put
out tlie fire until police broke
through a student ring around
the blaze and dispersed the
crowd.
Students let the air out of the
tires of one fire vehicle, tied
fire hoses in knots and then
stood on them to prevent their
use. Some hoses were discon
nected and hung from trees.

Teams In Title Tie

game of the season. The Hus

contests of the year, then won
five in a row before splitting
the final two games.
Coffey, who had been de
moted to the second string after

against UCLA two weeks before
scored on a four yard plunge
in the second period and a three
yard smash in tlie final quarter
to lead Washington past the
