New Index Will Cover
Cradle To Grave Costs
WASHINGTON (ITU The
Labor Department will check
prices from the cradle to the
grave for its streamlined cost-of-living
index that will appear
next Frebruary.
The costs of funerals a con
troversial national topic will
be calculated for the first time
in computing average expenses
of the city-dwelling wage earn
er. Labor Department officials
said investigators would check
the price of a complete funeral
with undertakers in 50 cities.
Their findings on funerals will
not be listed separately by Uie
government but will be blended
Ceramics Talk
Slated Tonight
Dr. Leo Karczag will speak
on "Ceramics as a Hobby and
a Profession" at the Klamath
Art Association's meeting today
at 7:45 p.m., at the gallery, 120
Riverside.
Besides having studied under
a Swedish teacher. Dr .Karczag
was enrolled for three courses
in ceramics at the "University
of Hawaii this past summer.
Examples of his works will be
displayed.
The meeting is open to the
public.
Arsonist Seen
At Jersey Fire
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (UPI
Police today hunted a convict
ed arsonist seen near the Surf
side Hotel less than an hour
after fire swept the building,
killing 25 elderly persons.
Det. Capt. William Rickert,
chief of the city's arson squad,
said the suspect moved from
his known address but still
was believed to be in the city.
"I'm hoping to have him in
custody today," Rickert said.
He said Uie man, whose iden
tity was withheld, boarded a
bus just 2'z blocks from the
Surfside Hotel about 40 minutes
after Uie first alarm was sound
ed. The bus driver recognized the
man as a "know n arsonist" and
told Raymond Stark, superin
tendent of the Atlantic City
Transit Lines. Stark notified authorities.
State Woman
Dies In Hawaii
HONOLULU (UPI I An au
topsy was ordered for a 63-ycar-old
Oregon woman who died
early Wednesday in a hotel in
Hilo, Hawaii.
The dead woman was identi
fied as Mrs. Florence Thrane
o( Route 1, Hood River.
She checked in Tuesday at
tlie Naniloa hotel with her hus
band. Marcus, their son, Mar
cus, Jr., ond a companion, Mrs.
Edna W. Sutford of PorUand.
Mrs. Sutford, who shared a
room with Mis. Thrane, said
the woman fell out of bed short
ly before midnight and died
shortly thereafter.
Thrane said his wife had been
ill for some time.
Chiloquin Man
Faces Charges
Charles Hood Jr., 33, of Chil
oquin was arrested in a Klam
ath Avenue tavern Tuesday eve
ning and charged with carrying
a concealed weapon.
A police officer said he spot
ted Hood "staggering" into the
bar at Eighth Street and Klam
ath Avenue and followed him in
to arrest him for drunkenness.
The officer said that after
placing Hood under arrest he
searched Uie man and found a
straight razor in his left coat
pocket. Therefore. Uie police
man reported, Hoed was addi
tionally charged with carrying a
concealed weapon.
COMBS GETS AWARD

among six persons named
Thursday as winners of the sec
ond annual Joseph P. Kennedy
Jr. Foundation awards for out
standing contributions in the
field of mental retardation.
Besides Combs, Sen. Lister
Hill, D-Ala . and Rep. John E.
Fogarty. D R. I., also were cited
for leadership in the field. Win
ners of the service awards were
Dr. Grover Francis Powers,
professor emeritus of pediatrics
at Yale, and Dr. Robert P. L.
Lafon, professor of neuropsy
chiatry at the medical school of
the University of Montpellier.

went to Dr. Lionel S. renrose,
professor of eugenics. Universi

The index already includes
Uie cost of a baby delivery,
pulling a tooth, beer and whis
ky, movie admissions and news
papers in addition to food, hous
ing and transportation.
.The index, often considered
one of Uie government's most
valuable statistics, will be
broadened to include single per
sons living alone. It formerly
was limited to families of two
or more.
Ewan Clague. commissioner
of labor statistics, said this
would make it more useful as
an indicator of how the 60 mil
lion urban wage earners in Uie
nation spend their incomes.
Changes in the price of food,
often of major importance in
the index's fluctuations, will be
"considerably less important"
in the new measure of inflation
ary trends. Clague said.
On Uie other hand, housing
and transportation costs will
have more weight in the index
starting next year.
Congo Police Seize Third Russian; Fate Of First Two Still Unknown

Congo police seized a third Rus

tion for suspected Soviet sup
port of subversives seeking to
overthrow the pro-Western gov
ernment of Premier Cyrille
Adoula.
Police dragged a Russian
journalist out of his bed and
took him into custody. Toe ac
tion followed the arrest Tues
day of two Soviet diplomats
who are still being held.
The arrested diplomats also
were manhandled by Congolese
police when they refused to per
mit security officers to search
their briefcases.
The fate of the diplomats,
Boris Voronin and Yuri Moiko
tnykh, remained unknown. Vor
onin was described as an em
bassy counselor and -Maikot-nykh
as a press attache.
There has been no official
word cn the incident involving
the diplomats from the Congo
lese government for more than
36 hours despite a stiff protest
