Dear Ann Landers: I am a
girl who has always loved band
music. My big ambition was to
be in a band. Now that I am a
freshman in high school I have
signed up for trumpet lessons.
I really preferred the clarinet
but they have plenty of clarinet
players and they were short on
trumpets, so 1 agreed to help
them out
The problem is my father. He
says he can't stand to hear me
practice because it givea him a
headache. Furthermore, it re
minds him of when he was in
the army and he says he Is
breaking out with the same ner

You can practice either after
school or at school. Most schools
have practice rooms which you
can use If you ask and I hope
yours Is one of them.
Dear Ann: What makes peo
ple lie and pretend to be what
they are not? A woman wto
came to work In Ibis office re
cently lost no time in telling us
all about her fine furniture, her
exquisite linen and china. She
described her elegant back,
ground and well-behaved chil
dren. Sunday I was driving by her
home. She was in the yard so
I stopped for a moment. I could
tell she was embarrassed that
I had caught her in a filthy
housedress, and without shoes.
She did not invite me in but
one of her children came out of
the house. He was eating some
tiling out of a pan. (He must
have been the cultured one.)
The bouse needed painting
and the porch furniture was
broken and faded. The yard
looked like I jungle.
Yesterday at the office she
started in again about her ele
gant surroundings. She seems
to have forgotten I was there.
How can people be like this?

"Rebels' Try
To Block

fight was underway today by
dissident shareholders and di
rectors of Western Pacific Rail
road to block merger of the line
with the Santa Fe Railway.
The group, which includes
three of the 16 directors, hopes
to keep the 1.193-mile San Fran-cisco-to-Salt
Lake CRy line in
dependent. The WP board ma
jority has voted to support San
ta Fe's application to the inter
state commerce commission for
authority to acquire stock con
trol of WP.
The "rebels" maintain that
the railroad is solvent and as
such should continue to oper
ate independently. Both Santa
Fe and Southern Pacific ap
plied to the ICC to acquire the
WP. An ICC commissioner rec
ommended on Sept. 10 that San
ta Fe be authorized to acquire
WP through a common stock
exchange. The full commission
has yet to rule on the case.
Monday, the "rebels" vowed
they would fight the board down
to the last vote in an effort to
keep WP independent. The
group announced that as soon
as filing can be made with the
Securities Exchange Commis
sion, it will solicit proxies in op
position to management's position.

AFL-CIO Snubs Longshoremen, Teamsters

wanis Club will sponsor its sec
ond annual Kiwanis Kapers on
Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22
23, in the Alturas Elementary
School all-purpose room.
Last year's variety show by
the Kiwanians was so successful
that the demand for another
brought forth the lusty group to
again entertain the people of
Alturas with a gay vaudeville
revue.
Director Bill Diekroeger said
the two-act entertainment will
begin at 8 o'clock each evening
and will feature more than 12
acts of the finest entertainment
in Modoc County.
NEW YORK (UPD The AFL
CIO Tuesday refused to consider
readmission of the Teamsters
and International Longshore
men's and Warehousemen's
(ILVYU) Unions unless they
clean out alleged corruption and
communism, respectively, in
their ranks.
Before the biennial convention
took a vote on a resolution con
cerning the readmission, AKL
CIO President George Mcany
took issue with a charge by na
tional Maritime Union President
Joseph Curran that the federa
tion has kept the Teamsters Un
ion out because of a difference
in personalities.
The Teamsters, headed by
James Hoffa, was ousted from
the AFL-CIO on charges of cor
ruption. The ILWU, headed by
Harry Bridges, was expelled for
lleacd Communist leanings.
Neither union has applied for re
admission to the federation.
Curran sent a message which
said the AFL-CIO had taken
"the flat position that as long
as James Hoffa is president of
the Teamsters Union" ,the un
ion will be given no considera
tion by the federation. He said
this was "double standard treat
ment" based on personality.

readmisaon for the two unions
were originally offered by the
convention. One for the ILWU
was offered by the International
Woodworkers of America. Two
others for the readmission of
the Teamsters were submitted
by the Woodworkers, the Jour
neymen Stonecutters Association
and the Building and Construc
tion Trades Department of the
AFL-CIO.
But the resolution which was
voted upon was a substitute one
offered to the convention by the
resolutions subcommittee at the
federation. It said the readmis
sion of the unions should be con
sidered only if fhe two unions
have cleaned up their ranks.
The resolution, the same one
passed in 1961, was passed by
the delegates.
Earlier, the national com
mander of the American Le
gion told the convention that the
United States could not sit idly
by while the Soviet Union is
showing signs of weakness.
