Salary Cut
Bill Routed
SALEM (I'PI'-A talary-cut-ting
bill was forced into retreat
today after a brief appearance
on the House floor.
The House voted 34-23 to re
turn the bill to the Ways and
Means Committee either to
die there, or to be divided into
three separate measures and re
turned to the floor.
The bill would have:
Cut legislators' pay from
$250 to $200 a month.
Cut the salaries of the gov
ernor, other elected state offi
cials, and the superintendent of
public instruction seven and one
halt per cent.
Cut the salaries of about 477
lop state employes by 15 per
cent on amounts over $10,000.
The vote was mixed. Some
who voted to return the bill to
committee wanted tlie questions
divided so tlie House could act
on each separately. Others
hoped it would die in the committee.

Plan Political Talks
Evans Will Get
'Truth Serum'
PORTLAND UPI - Accused

the influence of "truth serum,"
Circuit Judge Charles Redding
ruled Tuesday.
WASHINGTON (UPH - Gov.
William W. Scranton had an ap
pointment today with Sen.
Barry Goldwater to talk about
politics in Pennsylvania where
Goldwater backers have sur
faced to challenge Scranton's
favorite son candidacy for the
Republican presidential nomina
tion. Goldwaler's position, an
nounced at a Pittsburgh news
conference last week, is that he
is not a candidate now and has
no responsibility for discourag
ing political activity by his
friends.
Scranton was expected to call
on the Arizona senator late to
day after a flight by private
plane from Harrisburg. He re
quested the meeting.
His request came alter Gold
water supporters in western
Pennsylvania began making
noise about running pro-Gold-water
candidates for the GOP
National Convention delegation
in the Republican primary next
April 28.
According to reports here.
similar activity may develop
toon in eastern Pennsylvania.
Scranton is regarded by Re
publicans as a possible pres.
idenlial nominee in case of a
national convention deadlock.
He repeatedly has denied that
he would be a candidate but
has agreed to go to the conven
tion as a favorite son candidate
of the Pennsylvania delegation.
He reiterated this week that
he was not a candidate for na
tional office in a message de
clining an invitation to enter
the Maryland presidential pri
mary next May.
Maryland GOP Chairman Da.
vid Scull made public Scran
ton's message declining to enter
tlie Maryland primary. Scull
said that Gov. Mark Hatfield of
Oregon also had declined to en
ter tlie Maryland contest.
Sens. Thruston B. Morton of
Kentucky and Gordon Allott of
Colorado previously turned down
invitations. Scull said he had re
ceived no reply to invitations to
Goldwater. Rockefeller and for
mer Vice President Nixon.

Kennedy Prepares 'Hon Political' Jaunt To Texas
DALLAS (LTD - President
and Mrs. Kennedy fly into Tex
as Thursday in tlie Democrats'
prologue to the 1W4 presidential
campaign.
The White House insisted the
visit was largely "nonpoli(ical"
but at least one political speech
was planned. Five other talks
and a Texas deer hunt were
scheduled.
Vice President and Mrs. Lyn
don B. Johnson were to join tlie
Chief Executive and be his host
at the 300-acre BJ ranch, 65
miles west of Austin. Tlie two
men were scheduled to hunt
deer at the Johnson spread.
Kennedy obviously will be
pressing for support in Texas,
where voters two weeks ago re
jected repeal of the state's poll
tax. Johnson, a former Texas
senator, actively stumped for
repeal of the poll tax, but op
ponents hit repeal as a play into
hands of liberals.
Mrs. Kennedy's first, trip to
tlie Lone Star State may be the
first of many campaign outings
by the First Lady. She feels she
"is needed" in tlie drive to re
elect her husband.
The Chief Executive Thurs
day dedicates the Aerospace
Medical Center at Brooks Air
Force Base, at San Antonio,
then flies to Houston to address
an appreciation dinner for vet
eran Rep. Albert Thomas, D.
Tex. Th presidential party will
spend the night in Fort Worth.
