enormous crystal chandelier
winked its myriad lights down
on Audrey Hepburn and Rex
Harrison for the grand ballroom
scene of "My Fair Lady" when
a horse voice shattered the air.
"ft's be quiet on the set."
The voice belonged to George
Cukor, who is directing the
movie version of Broadway's
greatest musical. And he was
shouting at more than 200 ex
tras who milled around under
the lights. Because "Jly Fair
Lady" is the most costly pic
ture ever made in Hollywood
$17 million!, each minute's de
lay on the Warner Bros, stage
wasted thousands of dollars.

ter while Cukor instructed the
extras and bit players on their
assignments.
The set was brightly illumi
nated, a sunburst of elegant
costumes, extravagant jewelry,
beautiful women and debonair
men. Hair stylists and makeup
specialists circulated among the
actors.
Ready for another take, Cu
kor called, "Roll "em," and the
action began. Suddenly Eliza
Doolittle and Henry Higgins
came vibrantly alive as Audrey
and Harrison spoke their lines.

Like Liz, Marie was born in

like Elizabeth," said Marie, her

mor. "I was just born that way.

When the cameras stopped
grinding the performers re
laxed. iMiss Hepburn smiled brightly
when asked how the picture
was going.
"Wonderfully," she said. "I
find it more ecstatic than hard
work. Professionally it's the
grandest thing that ever hap
pened to me."
Harrison, never considered a
super star before "My Fair
Lady," has the distinction of
being the only actor to star in
two pictures the combined cost
of which is $57 million "Cleo
patra" and "iMy Fair Lady."
He was asked whether he
thought tins picture would
match the iNew York production
for quality and artistic accom
plishment. "I should certainly hope so,"
he said.
Cukor is the key to success
or failure for "Aly Fair Lady."
He is the most recent of many
distinguished movie directors
who have been put on the spot
in developing a smash Broad
way hit into a smash box office
film. ,
In the past Hollywood has
fallen woefully short of doing
justice to great musicals
"South Pacific," "Carousel,"
"Oklahoma." "Guys and
never made that mistake.
"Actually I was an insurance
policy for Liz more than any
thing else," she explained. "If
during the latter stages of the
picture, she had refused to con
tinue In the role of Cleopatra;
or if she had been unable to,
they could have used me in
enough long and medium shots
to finish the movie.
'In one scene on the barge I
doubled for Liz and it still re
mains in the picture. It was a
long shot, but it's me."
This Is Marie's second pic
ture in Hollywood, but she has
appeared In more than 25 mov
ies in England. The British, she
points out, rarely mention her
resemblance to Liz loo well
bred, you know. But in this
country she is constantly re
minded by strangers.

a half million dollars was spent
on costumes alone.
On closer Inspection one notes
that there are definite differenc
es between the two beauties.
Elizabeth's eyes are violet,
for instance. But Marie is
younger and she's more gener
ously endowed in the curve de
partment than her lookalike, if
such a thing is possible.
Marie has managed to lose
her English accent, only occa
sionally lapsing into British pro
nounciation of words like
"cawnt" for can't.
"I've been In Hollywood ten
months," she concluded, "and

Moore gets a brand new car
every three months whether he
needs it or wants it or not.
Because one of his sponsors
is an automobile manufacturer
lOldsmobilci. Garry is expect
ed to push tlie product in pri
vate life by tooling around New
York in tlie latest models.
The garage of his home in
Rye. N.Y., therefore, always
holds a shiny new sports model
and an equally glittering station
wagon.
And the crewcut emcee is ap
preciative. . He drives the 30
miles from home to office every
working day, leaving home
about 9 a.m., to avoid the peak
rush-hour traffic. Still, it takes
him 45 minutes from door to
door, the latter being the Hen
ry Hudson Hotel while the CBS
production center is being re
built. Like almost all television
stars Moore cherishes quiet pri
vacy when he leaves the office
in the evening. He also has
made a point of shielding his
lamily Xrom tlie glare of the
limelight.
A regular on radio and tele
vision since 1935, Moore's home
life is a well-kept secret.
"I planned it that way," he
says.
Deserve Privacy
"Just because I'm an enter
tainer is no reason why my wife
and children should be exploit
ed. 1 think they deserve a pri
vate lite, and I m happy they ve
been able to have it."
Garry and Nell have been
married 25 years. They have
two sons. Mason, 23, and Garry
Jr., 20. IMason is a recent grad
uate of Harvard and currently
is enjoying a year-long trip
around Uto world, the result of
a fellowship he was awarded.
Young Garry is working at the
Camclback Inn m Phoenix,
Ariz., after two years at tlie
University of Arizona.

the two-story colonial Moore
home echoing with loneliness.

Moore's schedule is one of the

dition to his weekly variety

A Secret" and star of a 10-min-ute
daily radio program.
Long Vacation
The pace is such that Garry
seeks long vacations every sum
mer at his home in Mt. Desert,
Maine.
It is a fix-room hideaway.
Cape Cod style, right on the
ocean. Converted from an
ancient coach house, the cot
tage is a real haven or Moore.
There are no otlier residences
nearby and tourists rarely visit
the area.

over, Garry hurries to his ketch."

Island Sound, and hightails for
tlie rugged coast of Maine.
For two and a half months
each year he manages to get
away from it all. But even at
home in Rye ttie iMoores main
tain an element of normalcy.
'Most of our friends are busi
nessmen," Moore says. "I'm
probably the only entertainer in
the neighborhood. We enter
tain a little on weekends or may
be go out to dumer."
Eats Italian ' ;
Garry loves Italian food which
is frequently prepared by Nell.
They do not have a cook, but
household chores are dispatched
by a maid, a cleaning lady and
a gardener.
Because of the distance from
Manhattan the Moores seldom
go into New Y'ork for dinner or
to catch Broadway plays.
Instead Garry prefers to re
main at home reading. He
reads at least three books - a
week. It's a tiling with him. Ho

mils that he reads everything:
from novels to the labels on as
pirin bottles.
On weekends Garry sails his
boat, weather permitting.
On Wheels
The deer shared a pen with a
dog and tlie injured cougar. In
another pen was a coatimundi
(ant eater) and an alligator snap
ping turtle. A coyote and peccary
(pig-like animal from South
America) shared another pen.
Two elk and a cougar cub com
pleted the truckload.
The dazed vets prescribed mi
nor treatment, too startled even
to ask Robinson what he was do
ing with all those animals.
