top-ranked teams this weekend
according to the college football
oddsmakers.
Texas, Navy, Mississippi, and
Michigan State the power
elite of the major college set
all have been installed two
touchdown or better favorites
for Saturday's games, as has
been ninth-ranked Nebraska.
The rest of the nation's lop
10 are expected to have their
hands full with tough oppo
nents, especially Illinois I No. 81
which is a three-point underdog
to Big Ten rival Wisconsin.
Top ranked Texas, with only
two teams standing between
them and the Southwest Con
ference title, a Cotton Bowl
bid, and the national champion
ship, risks its perfect record
against Texas Christian (3-3-1).
The Longhorns, the only major
college outfit with a spotless
slate, are 124 point choices.
Roger "Staubach's sensational
passing has made Navy (No. 21
a solid 12-point favorite over a
20-20 Duke team, although the
Blue Devils are presently in a
three-way tie for the Atlantic
Coast Conference title.
Third ranked Mississippi,
skipping merrily to another
Southeastern Conference cham
pionship, rates 15'j points bet
ter than erratic Tennessee;
punch-drunk Notre Dame, bat
tered and bruised by Navy and
Pittsburgh in its last two
games, is unlikely to get any
sympathy from Michigan State
(No. 4i which rates a 13'2-point
selection on the strength of Us
Big Ten leadership; and Ne
braska are 16 points stronger
than Oklahoma State.
Pitt (No. 5i, Oklahoma (No.
fi', and Alabama (No. 7) all
rate one-touchdown favorites
over ranked opponents. The
Panthers are 7-point picks over
Army (No. 12 1 in the East's
feature game; the Sooners are
favored by 6'i over Big Eight
rival Missouri (No. 15) and

spread over 13th-ranked Geor

realized what they were starting
when they introduced the first
attack of any consequence to
surprise Army in li)13.
Now, 50 years later, the na
tion's college footballers are us
ing the air for more than 40
per cent of their travel.
The figure has been soaring
steadily, reaching a record 39.0
per cent last year, but not until
Saturday did it go over the 40
per cent mark. Not only has 40.1
per cent of the 1963 season's
mileage to date been pass-produced,
but 24 major teams have
gained more in the air than on
the ground and 33 players have
thrown for more yardage than
anyone has carried the ball
from scrimmage.
Emphasizing the point is the
fact that seven of the lop 10
major teams in total offense are
also in the top 10 in passing in
NCAA Service Bureau statistics
released today. This passing
fancy has also influenced the
scoreboard, since the only two
teams now averaging over 30
points a game Utah State and
Navy are also among the air
powers.
The most notable exception to
the rule is Texas, which came
through its battle with air
minded Baylor as the majors'
only all-winning team after Au
burn and Princeton were both
dropped from the unbeaten
ranks over the weekend. And
Princeton has rolled to its 6-1

10 "and possibly the country."
The crowd in Saturday's
game here is being watched as
record with an almost total dis
dain for the pass. The Tigers
have thrown the ball only 54
times, but made them count for
five touchdowns.
On top in total offense and
scoring is Utah Slate, sixth in
the passing ranks. Wichita, third
in passing, is second in total
offense. Navy is fifth in pass
ing, seventh in total offense,
second in scoring and is the na
tion's pass-accuracy leader in a
runaway. The Middies have
been successful on .669 of their
pass attempts and the only oth
er major with a better than 60
per cent completion record is
Washington, .602.
Tulsa look advantage of Bay
lor's struggle with Texas to sit
in the Bears' chair as this
week's team passing leader. Ne
braska is fourth in total offense
combining its rushing lead with
only 722 passing yards.
Mississippi, one of two un
beaten but tied, majors, is ninth
in total offense, seventh in pass
ing and first in the nation in
touchdown passes with 15.
