The Civil Aeronautics Board
(OAiB) soon may learn from a
flight recorder what caused an
Eastern Airlines DC8 to lose an
engine and fall 13,000 feet in 20
seconds.
Tom Saunders of Fort Worth,
a CAB examiner, said board ex
perts in Washington were study
ing tape from the recorder,
known as a "black box."
Saunders hoped to finish Tues
day a hearing into the cause of
the incident over the Texas Gulf
Coast Saturday.
The jetliner, bound from New
York to Mexico City, had its
No. 3 engine ripped away and
the plane fell from 18,000 feet
to 5,000.
Seventeen persons were in
jured but the plane later made
an emergency landing at Barks
dale Air Force Base, Shreve
port. Several passengers were
pinned to the ceiling because of
the airliner's rapid fall alter
hitting the tuibulencc.
The 4,000-pound engine pod
was found Monday 50 miles
southwest of Houston. It gouged
a five-foot hole in a pasture.
N
Saunders said discovery of the
engine was "not particularly
significant" to the investigation.
