THE DOCTOR SAYS
Diabetes Drugs
Work As Team

My doctor says I have diabetes
insipidus and that the only tiling
that can be done to relieve me
is injections of pitrcssin. I am
getting tired of sticking myself
with a hypodermic needle. Is
there any drug that l ean take
by mouth for this condition?
A Injections of pitressin have
been standard treatment for
many years. Recently chlorothl.
azide and hydrochlorothiazide
tablets have been used to treat
-this disease. They reduce the
amount of waler drunk and the
quantity of urine by 30 to 50
per cent. This allows the victim
to cut down on the number of
:; injections, but not to stop them
altogether. The tablets work
best in those whose disease is
not controlled by the pitressin.
They will not work at all if you
are taking cortisone or any of
-Jlie related hormones.
Z Incidentally, there is no rela
tion between diabetes insipidus
C;and the commoner diabetes

Training Program Urged
To Help Losing Industry
PORTLAXD ( DPI i -The log
ging industry needs a program
of vocational training to supply
it with skilled and semiskilled
employes, a panel moderator at
the 54th Pacific Logging Con
gress said Thursday.
C. H. Willison, an official of
Crown Zcllerbach from Port
land, said the industry was
faced with a growing pool of
men wanting work, but un
trained for tlie jobs there are to
fill.
He said the industry had tra
ditionally trained its own men
but today was losing good men
to industries who will furnish
additional education.
George Steretel, a panel mem
ber and professor of logging en
gineering at the University of
Washington, said professional
forestry schools should look with
favor upon a vocational training
program for young men to enter
the industry ea kiggers. He said
there was no direct relationship
between what was taught in the
forestry schools and what
would be tauglit in vocational
schools.
Everett Barton, former Wey
erhaeuser Co. official and an in
structor at Lower Columbia Col
lege in 1ongvicw, said at least
one effort was being made to
provide young men with voca
tional training. He said industry
was cooperating with the school
to insure the most practical pos
sible courses.

He said larger trucks carrying
up to 800.000 pounds would re

modern trucks are capable of
carrying increased loads with

weight because of new five
axle trucks and trailers.
James fiagley, of the U. S.

would be other problems when
dry decking was used.
Education
Honored
Next Week
By DAVID NYDICK
L'PI Education Specialist
The theme for American Ed
ucation Week, Nov. 10-16, is
"Education Strengthens tlie Na
tion." Tlie purpose of tlie week
is to concentrate attention upon
education as. a major factor
in our society.
As the nation pays tribute to
educators, interest will be di
rected toward seven important
aspects of education. Beginning
on Sunday the topics for consid
eration are: Values of free
men; learning opportunities for
all; quality teaching; balanced
curriculum; community re
sources; financial support;
goals for tomorrow.
The effectiveness of the pro
gram depends on the cooper
ative effprts of you and the
school. Many state and national'
organizations will be participat
ing. Each community should make
an attempt to learn more about
its schools. A school reflects the
desires of the community for
which it exists. Tlie quality of
the educational program , will
depend upon tlie interest and
support of the public.
Pare his have a direct interest
in tlie schools because of their
children. Most schools direct
their programs toward parents.
Perhaps this year an effort will
be made to reach all members
of the community even if they
do not have children attending
the schools They are all in
volved in supporting budgets,
They all directly or indirectly
benefit from education.
Modern education extends. be
yond the schools. It involves
community services and the
home. Success, therefore, is de
pendent upon close cooperation
between all tliesc areas.
Our nation has grown to rec
ognize that its education sys
tem is the backbone of its cul
ture. No other area has so much
to offer in terms of maintaining
and improving the nation's po
sition at homo and abroad.
American Education .Week
should only be tlie beginning.
The community's interest and
support must continue through
out he year. It is only by con
tinuous evaluation, research
and support that the standards
and quality of oiu schools will
continue to rise. The schools
will increase tlreir effectiveness
if (lie cosiuiinity w ill put forth
the necessary efforts.

Scribe Learns Secret
Of Analyzing Elections
Dy DICK WEST
WASHINGTON (UPD - Aft
er each election there comes a
period of what is known in po
litical circles as "analyzing the
returns."
The ballots we cast don't just
speak for themselves, you
know. In order for us to under
stand why we voted the way
we did, somebody has got to sit
down and figure out what we
meant w hen we voted that way.
I save great admiration for
election interpreters, mainly be
cause I have never been able
to master that art myself. But
I keep on trying just the same.
In the wake of the elections
this week, I approached a
friend of mine who specializes
in interpretations and asked
him to give me a few pointers.
Says It's Easy
"I'll be glad to," he said.
"It's quite simple really, once
you get the hang of it. When
issues are involved you analyze
the politicians, and when poli
ticians are involved you analyze
the issues. Got it?"
"I think so," I said. "Would
you mind giving me an exam
ple?" "Very well. Take the .mayor
ally election in Philadelphia.
A Democrat named James H.
J. Tate defeated a Republican
named James T. McDcrmott.
How would you interpret that?"
"Could it mean that a major
ity o! the voters felt that Tate
would be a better mayor thai'i
McDcrmott?"

that Philadelphia voters are

"You are trying to analyze
the politicians," my friend said.
' What this election provides
is sn opportunity to analyze the
political impact of the civil

Tries Another
"I think I'm catching on," I
said. "Try me on another one."
"All right. In New York City,
the voters went on record 3 to
I in favor of legalizing off-track
betting on horse races. Let's
see how you analyze that."
"I analyze it to mean that
three out of every four New
Yorkers are in favor of legaliz
ing off-track betting," I said.
"Now you are trying to
analyze the issue," my mentor
commented. "This one should
be. interpreted as a political vic
tory for Mayor Wagner."
I thanked my friend for ex
plaining the system to me and
I believe I have it all straight
ened out now.
