Civil Defense Sirens Found Hard To Hear !n Downtown Area
The testing ot the Klamath
Falls' civil defense alarm sys
tem Monday was a complete
success, except in the one sec
tion where it's needed most
the downtown area.
Civil Defense Director J i m
Watson said Wednesday that
many people in the county court
house and various other build
ings along Main Street were
barely able to hear the 12S deci
bel siren which blared out its
alarm from the roof of t h e
Medical - Dental Building at
noon Monday.
Some others walking near
Main Street or driving in the
vicinity of the siren were of a
different opinion. They ap
praised that the noise emitted
by the siren was irritating and
too harsh.
Elsewhere, three smaller si
rens on poles at Lakeview and
Trinity streets, Washburn Way
and Eberlein Avenue, and Pat
terson and South Sixth streets
produced an alarm loud enough
to be heard by residents in their
respective areas, Watson said.
The smaller sirens are d i s
similar than the type at t h e
Medical Dental Building in
that tliey are stationary, while
the alarm of the oilier model is
sounded through a horn as it
revolves on top of the building.
Watson believes that the horn
is pointing too high and indicat
ed that it might be heard by
more people working inside of
fices in the heart of the busi
ness area if it were lowered.
Watson said he would discuss
the matter with the firm which
installed the system and ask for
their recommendations. Mean
while, the CD alert system will I on the first Monday of every
continue to be tested at noon I month, he said.

tea
You're surrounded by clean and quiet warmth
when you heat your home electrically. Every room is the exact tem
perature you wish. Flameless electric heat is as clean as sunshine
itself-no grimy walls or drapes. And just as silent, too-no noisy
furnace startups.
And think of the extra benefits you enjoy with electric heat! Less
redecorating bills! No furnace maintenance costs! No wonder electric
heat is becoming so popular, especially here in the Northwest where
PP&L rates are far below the national average.
