The road we take is of our

But should we travel the one
of despair,
Then we've locked the door

There's many roads to travel

And many falter and almost
fall . . .
But should we choose to
change our course
And travel the road of repair,

Aid Plants
CHICAGO (UPH - During
the short days of fall and win
ter, a variety of electrical "sun
substitutes" are available to
keep house plants healthier.
Home furnishings and garden
stores offer everything from a
rolling teriai'ium for a half
dozen plants to miniature green
houses or fixtures for handy
men to design and build their
own layouts.
Your florist can suggest the
best plants for an artificial
light garden. They include: Af
rican violets, episcias. gloxinias,
begonies, ferns and many oth
er foliage plants.
For some plants, fluorescent
tubes are often better than in
candescent bulbs because they
give off less heat. But even a
reading lamp, turned on for
several hours each evening, is
of some help over a pot of ivy
or philodendron.
One satisfactory srhm In.
eludes two 40-watt tubes one
white and one daylight in an
industrial type of reflector, sus
pended by chains so the tubes
are just a foot above the tops
of your plants. This arrange
ment is useful for the base
ment, an enclosed porch, or
even an unused closet as long
as you leave the door open for
ventilation.
For best results keep the
lights on 12 to 18 hours a day.
By using two reflector fixtures,
there will be enough artificial
light for a four-by-four foot
area.
To water plants, keep them
in porous clay pots set on
aluminum baking trays. Pour
water into each tray and the
pots will soak it up from the
sides and bottom.
It's possible to have a good
looking artificial light garden in
your living room by installing a
fixture with one tub? in a book
shelf. Grow your plants under this,
leaving 12 inches between tube
and plant tops. Cultural care
for plants under fluorescent
light is the same as for plants
grown in sunshim
