North and South would have
been better advised to get to
three no-trump. There would be
no trouble with that contract.
South should take most of the
blame. If he had merely bid
three spades North would surely
have tried three no-trump, but
once South jumped to four there
was nothing that North could do
about it.
Offhand it looks as if four
spades would make also, but
strangely enough South wound
up going down two tricks. It
wasn't really his fault, but rath
er because West came up w ith
the killing defense.
West's, king of diamonds
held the first trick and he noted
that his partner had followed
with the lowest diamond. A shift
was clearly indicated and West
saw no reason to lead a trump
or a club. A trump lead would
give declarer immediate control
of the play and as for a club
lead it was obvious that South
held the ace. Hence, West led a
heart.
Most players would have had
no trouble coming to that con
clusion, but most players would
have proceeded to lead the three
spot. This play would not have
worked. The nine Would be
played from dummy and East
would take his queen. East
could return anything he wished,
but South would be able to
make his 10 tricks.
West thought a little further
and led the king, not the three
spot. This play insured a sot,
but South lost an extra trick.
He let the king of hearts hold.
West continued with a low heart
and South finessed dummy's
jack. East took his queen and
led back a club, where upon
South still had to lose a club
and a heart.

Board Postpones Adoption Of Rules
SALEM lUPD - The Board
of Education today postponed
adoption of rules governing al
lotment of basic school funds to
public scliools providing part
time training for parochial and
private school students.
But the board made it clear
the regulations would be adopt
ed, because there was no other
choice.
The attorney general ruled re
cently that public schools should
be reimbursed for parochial stu
dents enrolled on a part time
basis, and that tlie public
schools were required by law to
accept such part-time students.
Large male lions weigh up to
500 pounds almost twice as
much as their mates.
Tlie issue was brought to life
after a parochial school at Cot
tage Grove enrolled its seventh
and eighth graders in tlie public
school for half a day.
Tlie Cottage Grove school
asked the attorney general to
rule on whether it had to accept
the students, and if so, if i t
could get basic school funds for
the parochial students' a t
tendance. Education Board Chairman
Eugene Fisher of Elkton com
mented "this is an extremely
sensitive subject throughout the
United States today."
Board member Ronald Jones,
Brooks, said "the situation is
developing when private schools
will start looking for state aid
in this fashion, especially a s
education costs increase."
Public instruction Supt. Leon
P. Mincar pointed out "we have
to accept the students. It's tlie
law. We have no option."
James L. Turnbull. deputy
superintendent, said as a mat
ter of practice parochial stu
dents have been attending pub
lic schools on a part time basis
for some time, but lie added
"I don't think the schools have
been reimbursed for this in the
past."
