Broad View Comes Before Details
Hy The Heading Laboratory
Written tor XEA
In our last chapter we talked
annul history how it moves
and (lows and how your .study
ins must lake this into account
how you develop a broad
overview o history and then lit
each smaller detail into the bts
ger movement.
Today we've lumped together
sociology, political science or
civics, and economics. Why do
you think we did that'.' Can you
see what they have in common,
and how they differ from his
tory? Stop for a minute and
try to figure it out for yourself.
And while you're at it, where
should we place English litera
turedocs it fit with today's
groups?
Have you figured it all out?
If you haven't, keep on reading.
Engli.-h literature, of course,
fits in with history, rather than
with sociology and the oilier
ones we'll be talking about
here. Unless you're taking ad
vanced courses in literary crit
icism, your English for Ameri
can! literature course is ac
tually a history of literature.
You're no! learning how
to write poetry, or really, what
makes great poetry, but you're
learning who wrote what and
when he wrote it.
The development of history
land the history of literature'
is. in a sense, a horizontal one.
11 flows and progresses from
one point In the next, from one
century to the next. Bui the de
velopment of sociology, psychol
ogy, political science and of
economics is a vertical develop
ment. These subjects construct
concepts and then develop those
concepts. Some illustrations will
help.
Sociology defines the concept
of group. The definition is with
variations' "an agglomeration
I of persons with a common bas
j is for action." From this gener
al concent, one can work down
'vertically i to regional groups,
; or people that live in the same
S geographic area, then to pur
i poseful groups, or people who
are working to achieve a com
mon end (perhaps they're or
ganizing .a charily drive, or
working in the same oflice. etc.'
or In take a slightly different
lack, yon could delinc group
awareness. 'Are you as con
scious of your "membership" in
a city as you are of your mem
bership in a social club?' And
then you could move on to the
concept of interaction between
groups.
In the same way, psychology
m i g h t define defense mech
anisms as unconscious tech
niques for dealing with, or
avoiding, stress in our lives.
Again, from this general con
cept, you can work down to
various types of delense mech
anismsobsessive - compulsive,
phobias, withdrawal, etc.
Economics, after defining, for
instance, the Law of Diminish
ing Returns will apply the gen
eral law to specific cases, e.g.,
will a progressive tax structure
'one that hits the higher in
come brackets harder than the
lower brackets' discourage
business investment?
What's the lies! way of han
dling these subjects? You've
probably figured it out. W hen
you overview the unit or I h c
chapter, or even when you're
listening lo the lecture, y o u
have to get the detiuilion of the
general concept that's being
dealt with. Only alter you've
understood the general concept
of "group." or "defense mech
anism." or "government by
compact." only then will you
concern yourself wilh details
and I he particular applications
of the concept. Don't get tied
up in details unlil you know
what you're talking about.

ROISE i I'PP Federal Judge
Chase A. Clark took under ad

G. X. Carter, Idahu's late rec

suit in Idaho court on grounds
slate law requires WPPSS to
apply for a permit to appropri
alc and store waters of the
state for power purposes.
Both WPPSS and the Pacific
Northwest Power Company w ant

on the Snake. They have filed
conflicting applications with the
