Bear Coach Scorns
'Upset' As Excuse
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)
George Halas refused to con
cede today that his Chicago
Bears actually were upset by
the San Francisco Forty Niners
but he settled for the fact that
they lost.
"Upset? There is no such
thing as an u p s e t in this
league," the paternal coach
said in the Bears' locker room
Sunday while helping the equip-
j ment manager pack up. "Any
team in the National Football
I League can win."
j And the rag-tag Forty Niners,
J led by castoff quarterback La-
mar McHan, proved him right
as (hey stunned Chicago 20-14.
; It marked the first setback in
1 six games this season for the
Western Division pace-setters
while the Forty Niners ended a
12 game losing streak that dat
ed back to last season and in
cluded this summer's exhibition
fiasco.
Bears Were Flat
"We'll just try to play better
next Sunday against the Phila
delphia Eagles and I'm sure we
will," Hajas continued in his un
ruffled manner. "The Forty
Niners were an aroused team
that was hitting. We were flat."
The shocker was a sweet one
for Jack Christiansen, the for
mer Detroit Lions' defensive
ace, who took over for coach
Red Hickcy three weeks ago.
After trying to find the combi
nation with a club that had lost
twice more under his direction,
Christiansen found a winner
when he kept McHan in the
lineup and left Bobby Waters on
the bench.
Now 30 years old and recent
ly cut loose by the Baltimore
Colts, McHan went the distance
while managing an offense that
knocked the props from under
the toughest defensive club in
the league.
During the first half, McHan
either hit on key passes or
handed off to (he revitalized
J. D. Smith for terrific shots up
Die middle as the Forty Niners
scored three times on drives of
99, 78 and 84 yards.

CORVALL1S (UPI) - "Our

Success came simultaneously
Sunday to Lamar McHan, who
was on the scrap-heap of pro

and to the San Francisco Forty

him for $100.
McHan engineered the upset

Bears from the undefeated

Western Division race Into a

it more enthusiastically than
McHan's old teammates, the
Green Bay Packers. By drub

Green Bay and Chicago both
