With Father," has been chosen
to play a short fused retired
Army colonel on the "Mr. Ed"
series, replacing the late Larry
Keating.
An old warhorse of a charac
ter actor, Ames will wage his
oun warfare against the unfor
tunate Mr. Ed, equine star of
the show.
Between "Life Wilh Father"
and his new assignment, Ames
starred in a little bomb tilled
"Father of the Bride" which
survived less than a year on
the air.
Ames is an enormously weal
thy man, owning one of the
largest automobile agencies in

mits. "This part fits in fine with

is an old friend of mine. And
we work on the same lot (Gen
eral Services Studios) where I
did 'Life With Father.' And I
can be home every night for
dinner.
"I'm overpaid, fat and getting
old, and I couldn't ask for any
thing better."

nor roles are filled by stars
who outshine the regular lead
ing man, Ccne Barry.
In a recently filmed segment
the supporting cast included
David Niven, Ida Lapino, Cesar
Romero, Tina Louise, Howard
Duff, Nick Adams, Laraine
Day, Phil Harris, Tom Tully
and Elaine Stewart.
Each was paid only $1,000.
Many a star demands $15,000
and up for appearances in
guest shots, but producer Aaron
Spelling pays one and all a flat
$1,000 a day, take it or leave
it. And the takers are standing
in line.
Why has "Burke's Law" be
come an "in" thing to do? And
how can Spelling lure the stars
to work for such grubby
wages?
"Simple," says Spelling. "We
give them an opportunity to
play roles they never get a
chance to play anywhere else.
We even call them and ask
them what kind of character
they'd like to do; then we write
a part to suit them.
"For instance, we gave lady
like Dina Merrill the chance to
play a prostitute. Dancer Juliet
Prowse plays a gal who gets
kicked out of a chorus line be
cause she can't dance. Dana
Wynter plays a nymphomani
ac." Most of the stars work only
a single day. But they are
babied with flowers, cham
pagne and caviar sent to their
homes. If they like, a Rolls
Royce is sent to pick them up
for work.
