Birmingham Negroes Back King As Leader
By United Press International
The public endorsement of
Martin Luther King Jr. as lead
er of Birmingham's Negro inte
gralionist element appeared to
day to increase the threat of
renewed racial demonstrations
in the Alabama city.
A letter saying the Negro
community was "proud to en
dorse and support the leader
ship" of King and the Rev.
Fred Shuttlesnorth was signed
by more than 100 Negro lead
ers Thursday and sent to Bir
mingham Mayor Albert Bout
well, who had dismissed the
two as "outside agitators."
The show of support strength
ened King's hand for a coming
showdown with Birmingham of
ficials over his demands that
tlie cily hire Negro police and
firemen and upgrade other city
jobs for Negroes.
King has issued an ultimatum
threatening to lead more huge
demonstrations if the city does
not hire 25 Negro policemen by
Tuesday as a start of the de
segregation. Other racial developments:
Williamston, N.C. Police ar
rested 57 Negroes who marched
on city hall Thursday night to
protest the jailing of one of
their leaders. The demonstra
tors were protesting the arrest
of Golden Frinks, president of
the local chapter of the South
ern Christian Leadership Confer
ence (SCLCi, on charges of
leading an anti-segregation
march.

Eastern States Close Dry Forests
By United Press International
Woodlands in six drought
stricken Eastern states were
closed to the public today.
Water supplies across the
Midlands dwindled to the dan
ger point and forest fires in
New York state were at the
"explosive" stage.
No relief was in sight.
Light showers fell across
parts of the Midwest Thursday
but did little to break the
weeks-long drought which has
turned forests and fields into
tinder boxes.
A thunderstorm at St. Louis,
Mo.. Thursday night ' was
blamed for setting at least two
fires by lightning.
Forests and woodlands were
closed to the public in New
York, Connecticut, Massachu
setts. New Hampshire, West
Virginia, and Vermont. Boy
Scouts were encouraged not to

HEWS for truck owners
who need a new one now
Things Chevrolet has developed
since the last time you bought to
give you more for your money:
Double-wall construction. This fea
ture of Chevrolet cabs and the Fleetside
pickup body has two advantages. Insula
tion and sound-deadening material is
sandwiched between the two layers of
steel in the cab to give you more comfort;
in the body, the lower inner wall acts as
A buffer against load damage, preserving
the outer appearance of the truck.
Suspension to fit the truck. Conven
tional half- and three-quarter-ton models
have independent front suspension with
variable rate coils in the rear. Variable
rate coils do not "bottom out" as readily.
Mediums and heavies have I-beam
suspension with variable-rate leaf springs.
It automatically stiffens as the load
increases and vice versa. It means a
smoother, flatter ride regardless of load,
a better handling truck.
The right engine. Chevrolet never has
been in better position to give you the
type and size you need for maximum
efficiency. Today there are many dif
ferent capacities of gasoline and dicsel
Chevrolet
V8's.
truck engines fours, sixes,
Stronger frames. Every conventional .
1964 Chevrolet truck has a ladder-type
frame. This type is more resilient, better
able to give with the load and terrain.
Its simple design also makes it easier to
mount special bodies on the truck. Its
riveted side rails are stronger.
Greater model selection. This time
you're going to find it a simple matter to
pick the exact type of Chevrolet truck
for the kind of work you do. In delivery
trucks, for instance, in addition to regu
lar panels and pickups, we have eleven
different sizes of ready-made walk-in
vans, some with full-width rear doors.
Quality and value. Chevrolet today
are a lot more truck than your money
bought the last time, and yet the price
tag is just about the same as 5 or 6 years
ago. Call your Chevrolet dealer for infor
mation or for a demonstration.
Quality trucks always cost less!

Nearly 125 fires were burning
in New York, with 26 new

G. Wilm said conditions were
"explosive" and asked all resi

leaf-burning ban.
Helm said a thick haze has

woodland and made it difficult
for fire-fighters to spot new out

The rookie spacemen, all
male and including the first
bachelor, were chosen one week
ago today to make up the na
tion's third, youngest and re
portedly most highly educated
team of astronauts.
They will compete with 16 vet
eransthe original 6even Mer
cury astronauts and nine others
added 13 months ago to the
more advanced Project Gemini
for berths aboard U.S. space
ships headed for lunar landings
in the next five to seven years.
The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA),
which is running the $40 billion
U.S. program to conquer the
moon, planned to introduce (lie
new space pilots late today in
the University of Houston's Cul
len Auditorium.
Notified of Selection
The 14 were notified only last
Saturday that a top-level team
including NASA Administrator
James E. Webb and deputies
Hugh Dryden and Robert Sea
mans had approved their selec
tion. The slender young jet jockeys,
all less than 34 years old, are
the cream of 271 applicants who
answered the space agency's
call tliree months ago for more
astronauts to beef up its pilot
team for stepped up manned
flights into space starting in
1965.
Informed sources said the
new astronauts probably will be
assigned almost exclusively to
Project Apollo tle program
with the national goal of land
ing Americans on the moon by
late 1D68. Assignments aboard
tlie interim, earth-orbit flights
of Project Gemini will go to the
16 previously selected space
men. From bases throughout the
United States and as far away
as Japan, the neophyte space
pilots were pouring into Hous
ton Thursday for their formal
introduction.
