Club proved anything but a
paradise Thursday when rain
and w ind swept across it in the
late afternoon to ruin some of
the bids for the leadership.
But Geiberger, ,26-ycar-old
former college star, came in
early with a four-under-par 67
that stood up all day against
the onslaughts of stars from
the United Slates and British
Ryder Cup teams.
Closest in contention aie Gay
Brewer and Lionel Heberl, who
finished early; and Art Wall,
who finished after the rain let
up, each with M.
Eight In Contention
In the 69 bracket were eight
men: Tommy Aaron, Ray
Floyd, George Will of England,
Ted Kroll, Bill Blanton, Don
January, George Knudson and
Bob Nichols.
Geiberger, who had an early
starting time, will be off the
tee late today and he hopes
that there is no duplication of
weather.

The annual nemesis is almost
upon us. The Owls will meet
Southern Oregon tomorrow night
in an OCC counter. Southern
Oregon and Oregon Tech have
been fierce rivals for years. In
11148 the Owls and the Red. Raid
ers met for the first time. The
SOC crew dominated. Since that
time the Owls have won five,
the Raiders seven, and there
was one tic. The balance of ath
letic power between the schools
has shifted from year to year.
In 1952 the Owls downed SOC
by an overwhelming 89.0. Last
year SOC humbled OTI 50.0.
This year's game should not
be a runaway for cither squad.
SOC with the passing attack of
outstanding reputation will be
the favorite. The Red Raiders
have switched all - conference
quarterback Doug Olsen lo wing
back. In this position Olsen is
a running and passing throat.
To fill Olson's spot SOC uses
Bill Bailey, a B-l, 155-pound jun
ior from Anderson, Calif. The
Red Raiders will center their
running attack around fullback
Mike Hood. Hood also passes
well which only complicates
mailers for the Owls.
Last ycur it was the Owls'
homecoming when the t w o
squads met most people would
like lo forget it. 11 was a tre
mendous morale and physical
beating for the young Owls.
However thore is one Owl grid
dor who hasn't forgotten the
abuscmcnt of last season's loss.

lineman Chuck Hawkins. Haw

Owls' starling end. It was his
first season in OTI athletics and

the hard way that Southern Ore
gon plays a rugged, sometime

season Chuck is anchoring the
Owls' defensive line at tho cen

Wall probably had the most
exciting round of the day. He
rolled in a 55-footer for a birdie
on the very first hole. He fol
lowed that with one from 50
feet on the 12th; and topped off
the round with a 40-fooler on
the last hole despite a sopping
wet, spongy green.
The first hole-in-one of the

been' a consistent outstanding
ball player. His ability as a
leader has been unchallenged.
If Chuck continues to shine on

possibility he will be the sec

griddcrs the greatest thrill of
their college grid career could
come tomorrow night in Ashland
if the Owls upset Southern Ore
gon and revenge the blemish of
last season.
A shining light on the Owl
secondary has been Gary Wald.
Wald, a defensive specialist has
combined his speed (10 flat in
the 100) and his ability to fol
low the ball to come up with a
great eltnrt in all four ball
games Wald's size hasn't
helped him this season (5 - 10,
170 pounds I. Pursuit of a 200
pound (plus) end isn't easy
when you're Gary's size but de
sire can take you a long way
and desire to play good ball is
one of Gary's greatest assets.
This week Gary will have to
be at his best for the aerial
circus of Southern Oregon. For
Wald and quarterback Mike
Glincs and tackle John Harris,
Saturday's game will be a home
coming. All three boys played
prep ball at Crater High School
in Central Point. It's a good
bet the hoys will want lo per
form in top flight action for
their hometown crowd.
