addition, the size and quality of
the cows in our herd has great
ly improved." . .
The first stop on the " tour
was at a new seeding of Siberi
an whcalgrass and Ladak alfal

1,000 acres of such secdings
have been made on the 70
Ranch without a failure. The

broken into a Held of pubescent
wheatgrass and alfalfa, 200
acres; crested uheatgrass and
alfalfa, 60 acres; and grain and
hay land. The year before the
section was broken out of native
sagebrush, it ran 25 cows (or
four months.
In 1062, about 10 years later,
tliis same section of land pro
duced 568 cow months of graz
ing, plus 41 tons of hay and 14
tons of grain. This year about
the same was produced, with
. more grass left standing.
The next stop was made in
one of the ranch's native range
fields. "We use our native
ranges during June w hen the al
falfa poses a bloat threat to the
cattle in our seeded ranges,"
Don said. Tlie 70 Ranch now
has its rangeland divided into
three pastures which allows the
livestock to go into a different
pasture first each year. This
helps maintain a good healthy
stand of nerenmal bunchgrass.
A final stop was made in a
field of native range belonging
to Walt Leehmann Jr. The area
was sprayed during late May
with 2, 4-D to control sage
brush. In addition to the sage
brush, a good stand of bitter
brush, a valuable livestock and
game feed, was present. The in
teresting point was that a ma
jor portion of the sagebrush
appeared to have been killed
by the spray, but the bittcrbrush
apparently suffered no damage.
It was pointed out by Bill Mo
scr, county extension agent,
that liming of the spray Job and
rate of chemical used were
the key factors in protecting the
bitterbrush.

Land Area
The Bureau of Land Manage
ment announced recently that
the Forest Service of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture has
filed an application to set aside
seven recreation areas, two rec
reation additions, and another
area for enlargement of an exist
ing roadside zone withdrawal,
comprising a total of 485 acres
in the Fremont National Forest
in Klamath and Lake counties.
Some of the lands have al
ready been developed for pub
lic campgrounds and picnic pur
poses. Withdrawal is requested
to protect the government's in
vestment in the government
and development of these areas.
All of the facilities are within
the Fremont National Forest
and are maintained under the
supervision of the regional for
ester, at Portland.
Stanley D. Lester, BLM Land
Office manager, stated that
withdrawals of this type protect
government improvement in
vestments and also preserve the
lands for public uses. The lands
would be closed to location and
entry under the general mining
laws, subject to valid existing
claims.
A detailed description of the
affected land will be published
in the Federal Register. It will
also be posted in the BLM Land
Office in Portland, the court
house at Lakcview and at Klam
ath Falls, and in local post offices.

You're surrounded by clean and quiet warmth
when you heat your home electrically. Every room is the exact tem
perature you wish. Flameless electric heat is as clean as sunshine
itself-no grimy walls or drapes. And just as silent, too-no noisy
furnace startups.
And think of the extra benefits you enjoy with electric heat! Less
redecorating bills! No furnace maintenance costs! No wonder electric
heat is becoming so popular, especially here in the Northwest where
PP&L rates are far below the national average.
