Greatness Of U.S. Movies

NEW YORK (UPI)-Add to the
English sports car, the vodka
martini, Pucci dresses and
French cuisine, one more "in"
foreign films and filmmakers as
being over and above their Amer
ican counterparts.
Our leading critics and more
selective filmgoers almost simul
taneously await and hail the lat
est works of Fellini, Antonioni,
Bergman, Truffaut, Richardson,
to name a few of the best.
This is an attitude singularly
missing at the unveiling of new
attitude is, if anything, steadily
growing. We find it hard to take
our own films seriously.
I submit that we have a tradi
tion of great movie-making in this
country.
I look back over a period of 30
years in films to my first days as
a screenwriter in Hollywood.
From then until now as a writer-
director - producer in New York
there has always been opportuni
ty tor me to express myself.
Insofar as talent, subject mat
ter, color and vitality are con
cerned, I'd match those long-ago
days at Warner Bros, as well as

II, England's "angry young men"
are both graphically and effec
tively portrayed on screen, who
is to deny that post-World War I
rebellious American youth were
as effectively, not to say dynam
ically, portrayed in the best of
the old Cagney, Robinson, Bogart,
Garfield films?
"Shoe Shine" was long preced
ed by "The Grapes of Wrath."
My very first film, They Won t
Forget," was as controversial in
theme, though not in kind, as my
latest, "Lilith."
I have erroneously been identi
fied with those who claim nothing
of value in made in Hollywood.
If I no longer work in Hollywood,
it is largely because of personal
reasons. I also happen to prefer1
living and working in New York.
But the fine film men like
George Stevens, Fred Zinncman,
Billy Wilder. William Wyler and
others work as superbly in Holly
wood as, with their talent, they
would in New York, Rome, Lon
don or Timbuctoo. They have
been hampered neither by the

the American film is adequately
attested to when one realizes that
films such as "The Hustler,
"Long Day's Journey Into
Night," "Davis and Lisa," were
made in, around or not far from
New York, far from the larger
and more propitious studio envir
ons of Hollywood. Yet those same
Hollywood studio auspices in no
way harmed a film such as "The
Apartment," made there.

HOLLYWOOD 'l'Pl-The new
television season has spawned
more than 30 of its young this
past month and now the networks
await the late of their progeny.
In the first few weeks there are
no measuring sticks. The ratings
are disregarded.
Televiewers are still discover
ing the offspring and continue to
twist the dial to find the most
amusing, entertaining and divert
ing of the HKi3-M crop.
Already the death knell has
sounded for one show. "100
Grand", the only new game show,
has been canceled.
This season there were more
than twice as many drama-adven
ture shows introduced than situ
ation comedies. .Most are promis
ing, some outstanding.
Highest Regarded'
Among those most likely to be
around for some time, at least
according to the critics, arc "East
Side-West Side," "The Richard
Boone show," "The Bob Hope
Theater, and Espionage.
All are diffecnt. "East Side"
deals with social workers in New
York's slums. Boone heads a
reportory theatre. Bob Hope s
scries is an anthology. 'Espion
age" is spy sluff.
But there are high expecta
tions, too, for "Arrest and Trial,"
"Outer Limit s," "Breaking
Point," "Great Adventure," and
"Mr. Novi'k."
The jury is still out among
fidgity video insiders on "The
Travels of Jaimie McPheeters,"
"The F u g i t i v e," "Channing,"
"Burke's Law" and "The Lieu
tenant." 1 Trailing in the early dramatic
running are "Greatest Show on
Earth" and "Redigo."
Four sprightly new, live and or
taped variety-musical shows made
their debuis this season, each un
der the banner of established
stars Danny Kaye. Jerry Lewis,
Dammit, it was unmilitary, the
brass decided
A directive was issued that use
of American troops and installa
tions was forbidden in flickers un
less hlcy are indigenous to armed
forces recruiting.
But the Navy is redfaced at the
moment due to the use of one of
its aircraft carriers in a new
movie that would have gone un-
sanctioned before the recent ban.

Helps Many
NEW YORK (UPI) - Many
years ago, bandleader Tommy
Dorsey was known as "the Star
Maker" because of the many show
business discoveries he developed
in his own band. They included
Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Dick
Haymes. Bunny Bcrigan, Buddy
Rich and others.
Today's version of star-maker
is Joe Hamilton of Bob Banner
Associates, the producer of "The
Garry Moore Show" on CBS-TV.
His philosophy is (hat television
is an ideal developing ground for
the stars of tomorrow.
Dancer Patricia Harty is an ex
ample of a young performer Ham
ilton helped emerge as a talent
He believes she's the first girl in
show business to come out of a
TV chorus line and jump into a
big role on Broadway. She took
over the lead in "Fiorello! which
had a long run.
How does Hamilton feel when a
talent he discovers leaves the show
and moves on up the ladder?
"I'd say it's the best thing that
could happen to them, because I
know how hard youngsters work
in this business to become a suc
cess. Remember, I used to sing
with the Skylarks years ago, and
Bob Banner gave me a chance to
develop as a producer.

ers seem to consider their cars
to be chargers, and the highways
tourney places, w here they mount
their steeds to joust with one an
other. As a result, 14,123 persons died
in car crashes last year.
The courts finally are making
an effort to dq something about
death on the highways.
The convictions of two drivers
for "attempting to coerce others
on the highways" were recently
upheld by the Federal Court.
West Germany is justly proud
of its fine four-lane autobahns.
There are 2,920 kilometers (2,-1
125 miles) of them.
Bicycles and horses are banned
from the autobahns, but any other
kind of vehicles can and do use
them, ranging from 12 horsepow
er midgets through trucks and
trailers hauling 12 tons of cargo
to racy sports cars that reach 100
miles per hour.
Slow lanes have been built on
some of the steepest slopes in re
cent years. But for most of the
length of the autobahn, all this
conglomeration of vehicles shares
two lanes in each direction.

ing is over many a viewer-scientist
will bet "Bonanza.". "Gun
smoke", "Ed Sullivan." "Perry
Mason." "Dr. Kildare." "Dick
Van Dyke" and. yes. "The Bev
erly Hillbillies" w ill be right back
in the top ten again this year.
Drivers of slow cars seem jeal
ous of the bigger ones and refuse
to make room. Big car drivers
consider it an insult to have to
follow a smaller or slower ve
hicle.
The two recent Federal Court
verdicts concerned typical auto
bahn maneuvers.
One involved a young man from
Frankfurt, driving along a sec
tion of the autobahn which has a
100 kph (62 mph) speed limit.
Moving in the left lane, the fel
low drove to .within 30 feet of an
other car driven by a woman who
was going just the allowed speed
and slowly overtaking a pair of
trucks. The man honked his horn
and flashed his lights. He saw the
woman ahead glance at him in
her rear vision mirror but she re
mained In the left lane, slowly
gaining on the trucks.
The man crew impatient, SU1J
honking, he gunned his motor un
til he was w ithin six or eight feet
of the woman. She saw him close
in, decided he was trying to ram
her and cut hard right. But she
was too close to the truck in that
lane, and had to brake hard. She
lost control, went off the road,
and flipped over. Miraculously,
she was only slightly hurt,
In the other case, a car driver
in the Ruhr found himself behind
a bus in the left lane slowly over
hauling a line of trucks. The ef
frontery of the bus driver trying
to pass trucks made the car driv
er so furious that as soon as he
could get around the bus he cut
sharply in front of it and slowed
down. For many miles, evcrytime
the bus attempted to pass, he
maneuvered to block it. lie was
sentenced to 30 days In prison for
coercion causing danger to life.

Wilkinson Remains Mum
On Possible Candidacy
OKLAHOMA CITY (UPI) -
Charles' Bud Wilkinson, who is to
Oklahoma football what Johi
Glenn is td space, Is very pos
sibly a 1964 candidate for the un
expired U. S. Senate term of the
late Robert S. Kerr.
Like Glenn, who has a flock of
worshipful admirers, Wilkinson is1
conceded to have a following In
both parties who would vote fori
him on either ticket. And that
jibes with rumors, which hate
him running both as a Repub
lican and Democrat.
The Oklahoma University coach
has kept quiet about the political
speculation. But the very fact he
refuses to deny it and his undis
puted popularity have whetted the
appetites of his would-be tup-
porters.
"I haven't given It any serious
consideration," he said. "I can't'
.say no. because that would

Four years ago, some state Re
publican leaders had him .tagged
as a possible candidate for vice
president.
Ironically, if Wilkinson does en
ter the U. S. Senate race. Ed
mondson, who is seeking re-elec
tion, would be one of his oppo
nents. Those who insist Wilkinson Is
running say he never has
flatly counted himself out and It
just wouldn't be appropriate for
him to announce until after the
1063 football season Is over. Filing
time isn't until next February.
Observers In the other camp say
his refusal to spike the -rumors
is typical of Wilkinson's person
ality and his long time policy of
not dignifying rumors by talking
about them.
