Doctor Disputes Theory Alcoholism Is Disease
LOS ANGELES (UPI)-A doc
tor specializing in the treatment
of alcoholism today disputed the
theory that it is a disease.
Dr. Stephan Seymour, medical
director of the Seymour Hospital;
and Clinic for Alcoholics in Los
Angeles, said, "I don't feel alco
holism is a disease. It is an ill
ness only when a person is suf
fering from acute alcoholism,
that is when he has been poisoned
by alcohol. But chronic alcohol
ism is an expression of a per
son's inability to think."
Seymour, a former Olympic
Games athlete, said in an inter
view that he came to his conclu
sions "after treating four or five
thousand patients.
"I realized that the common
denominator among all these pa
tients had been that they had not
known how to think," he ex
plained. "They think like children.
"By saving alcoholism is a dis
ease." he continued, "we have
put it into a very convenient light
so that it becomes excusable and
understandable. Saying it is a
disease is a wonderful out. The
alcoholic says, 'Don't blame me
for having a disease."
While Seymour conceded that
there might be a so-called "X"
factor in a person's body chem
istry which makes him allergic
to alcohol, he said that we biame
alcoholism on secondary factors.!
"The alcoholic doesn't drink for
the pleasure of it," Seymour said.;
"He uses alcohol to forget his
problems and the necessity to
solve them. The basic reason an
alcoholic drinks is that he is emo
tionally immature. Mature per-:
sons don't turn into alcoholics."
Seymour criticized the research
now being done in the field, say-;
ing it is concentrated into two
areas study of alcohol and study
of emotions.
"The word thinking is never
discussed," he complained. "A
person can find out the cause of
his fears but that doesn't teach
him how to think. It doesn't teach
him how to handle new problems!

An alcoholic's difficulties often
began in childhood, according to
Seymour, because parents pass
patterns of immature thinking on
to their children by their exam
ple.
"Problem drinkers are problem
thinkers surrounded by a family
of problem thinkers," he said.
Seymour believes so strongly
in the need for improved thinking
habits that he is writing a book
on the subject which, he said, is
the product of eight years re
search into the subject.
He also advocated teaching log
ic in schools.
"We are taught facts, but not
how to think," he said.
Fund Cut Delays Earth's Core Study

be set back by a year or more
because of budget cuts voted by
the House Appropriations Com.

The 8 million Mohole project
to study the earth's core wasj
among those that suffered when;
the committee chopped $286 mil-;
lion from the proposed $389 mil
lion budget of the National Sci
ence Foundation.
Mohole project funds account
for only a small fraction of the
total foundation budget for the
1964 fiscal year, which ends next
June 30, but it will suffer along
with others if the over-all cut
stands, a foundation spokes-;
man said Tuesday.
Mohole is a project to drill
through the earth's crust to the
underiving, little known mantle

Anti-Toxins Rushed To Treat Victims
Of Botulism; Death Toll Reaches Six
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UPI) -j
Supplies of a scarse anti-toxin
were flown from Canada and
Denmark today to combat a sus
pected outbreak of botulism, ap
parently stemming from pack
aged smoked fish, that already
has claimed six lives.
All of the known supply in the
United States of the anti - toxin
for the rare "E" type of food
poisoning has been brought into
use and appeared to be effective
in helping eight patients here in
Nashville. The anti - toxin was
flown here Tuesday by military
jet plane from Bethesda, Md.
A special commercial airline
flight arrived early today with
five pounds of the antidote from
the Connaught Medical Center in
Toronto, Ont.
Doctors still have been .unable
to make an ironclad diagnosis in
the death here Monday of David
Cohen, 35, and his 10 year - old
daughter, Amy Beth. The same
is true in the death of Nashville
Sunday of Mrs. Anna Belle
Phelps, 51, and on Sept. 30 of
F. W. Pruter. 36. Mr. and Mrs.
Chester Mitchell died last Thurs
day in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The victims all had one thing
in common. They had eaten
smoked fish from Michigan.
Vandcrbilt Hospital officials in
Nashville said Tuesday night that
Eric Charles Dallon, 5, of Hunts
ville. Ala., had been admitted to
the hospital with apparent symp
toms of botulism.
Dr. Richard Cannon, hospital
director, quoted the child s moth
er as saying that Eric had eaten
some of the suspected smoked
whitcfish last Friday.
Cannon said the mother said
some of the symptoms had shown
up Saturday and had grown prog
ressively worse before he Vas
brought to Vanderbilt.
He said Eric was in a respira
tor to help fight the paralyzing
effect of the poison. Cannon said
the boy's condition was listed as
critical.

The science foundation got $5
million from Congress for Mohole
work in the 1963 fiscal year ended
June 30. It asked a $10 million
increase for this year. The hope
has been to complete the project
in about four years from now.
The big cut voted by the House
committee would hurt the project
a foundation spokesman said, and
delay its completion by at least
a year. He said the stretchout
probably also would add to the
total cost.
