Young Duchin Wants To Be Actor
As Well As
PARIS (UPI) - The name is
Peter Duchin, he is 2ft and, like
his late and famous father, Ed
die, he plays the piano and leads
suave dance band.
But unlike father, son Peter
plans to be an actor for the
screen, too, he said in an inter
view. 'My dad appeared in several
movies but he didn't act, he al
ways played himself," said Pe
ter, tall, broad - shouldered and
dark, and as handsome as his
father.
I want to be an actor as well
as a bandleader. I ve studied
acting for two years In N e w
York. I can work In films in the
daytime and (till play with the
band at night."
Young Duchin will make his
debut in New York this fall in a
film. "The World of Henry Ori
ent, starring Peter Sellers. Du
chin will not portray a musician
or even come near (he piano.
Next he will work as another
non-musician in "What A Way To
Go" with Shirley Maclaine.
Peter admitted he cornered all
this success at 2ft largely be'
cause of his father's celebrated
name. Eddie Duchin dominated
popular dance music during the
M s and 40 and after his death
was immortalized on celluloid in
1958 when Tyrone Power and
Kim Novak starred in "The Ed
die Duchin Story."

I was as tall when I was nine
as I am now. And I was gawky
and ugly, too. Now all the guvs
who used to run away from me
when 1 was a homely kid in
Iiichmond (Va.) go around telling
people they went steady with me.
"I've never forgotten that no
body would have a date wih me
in those days, and up until I was
a teen-ager. The worst thing that
ever happened to me was when
a boy took one look at me and re
fused to go out on a blind date
How about that!"
Worth The Wait
In the tradition of the ugly duck
ling, Shirley has blossomed into
one of the most attractive actres
ses in the world.
But she laughingly admits she
married her husband, Steve Park
er, because he was the first man
who ever asked her and she was
afraid it might be the only one.
"When you're 12 years old and
stand 5 foot 7 you just count the
summers as they go by, waiting

smiling over his piano at dancers
in the St. Regis Hotel in New
York and at society parties.
' "I love music. I love to play
the piano." he said. "I started at

start children in music, isn't it?
"When I was in college, I de
cided to play piano professional
ly, like my father. I played with
an Army band when 1 was In
the Army in Panama. Then 1
decided to form my own band,
of 11 pieces, and opened at the
St. Regis last September."
Has Field To Himself
Young Duchin has the field of
young bandleaders virtually to
himself.
"It's difficult to (establish a
name as a bandleader noma

summer, Duchin stopped off In
Paris for a few days to renew
memories of his college days. He
studied musical competition at
the Sorbonne here in 1930 and
1957.
Apartments were scarce then,
too. so Duchin bought an English
barge, anchored it on the right
bank of the river Seine and lived
there.
Tub Renfals
NEW YORK (UPI) - Rental
bathtubs were the rage in 17th
century Europe.
Tlie Cleanliness Bureau, at any
rate, reports that renting a tub
on a regular basis was the only
sure means then, of keeping
clean. .
The tub was brought to the
house at the appointed hour.
and then picked up again to be
taken to the next customer. The
cleanliness historians made no
mention of who assumed the re-
ponsibilily for removing the
ring.
But the system did cause tome
complications especially among
women who iven then liked to
bathe el their leisure.

Crosby Boys Back With Reality
After Premature Rise To Fame
HOLLYWOOD (UPII-The four
golden Crosby boys, heirs to
riches and public scrutiny, have
crash landed from premature star
dom to the hard reality of the
world.
The name "Bing Crosby" is no
longer a magic wand for them.
Their private lives have been
devastated by divorce three out
of four and professionally they
have plummeted to the bottom of
the show business ladder.
Even the term Crosby Boys is
a misnomer.
They are men now. Gary is 30;
ards.
Williams entered show business
in a singing quartet wan nis
three brothers. The quartet was
moderately successful but never
attained the professional heights
that Andy has reached on his
own
He has his own television show
on NBC and his records have
sold millions of copies. Andy's in
come from television, personal ap
pearances and records has been
invested in holdings that will
give him added income.
His father, who is in the real
estate business in the San Fer
nando Valley residential area
near Hollywood, has advised An
dy on land purchases. The sing
er owns both acreage and apart
ment buildings.
Despite his increased wealth,
Andy insists he hasn't changed.
'I haven't changed my way of
living," he said. "I don't want
yacht or airplane.
In Hollywood, it's a common
occurrence lor newiy-nen per
formers to go on spending sprees
for motor launches, sailboats.
houses which are financially over
their heads and other unneces
sary expenditures.
Andy lived in an apartment Un
til 1961 when he married trench
actress Claudine Longct. Since
then he has purchased a Regen
cy style house in the Hollywood
hills overlooking Sunset Blvd.
The house had one large bed
room, a dining room, kitchen and
living room until Andy started
remodeling it in preparation for
their first child. There s also a
swimming pool In the yard.

rooms, Andy said, one tor tne
baby, one for a nurse, and one
is a library.
Andy's hobbies are golf and
art. The latter he shares with,
his charming wife.
Plays Golf
"What time I have off, 1
spend on the golf course," he
said. "Maybe I rnn get on the
course once or twice a month.
But when I'm on the road doing
personal appearances, It might be
every day. Sometimes my wife
goes with me. She docsn l play.
She likes the grass, trees and
squirrels."

A young lady named Rosalie
was relaxing in the tub when two
tub-movers rushed into her bou
doir. Her feminine modesty out
raged, Rosalie sued.
But the tub-carriers won. The
court decided they merely came
to pick up the tub for (lie next
customer and that Rosalie, in
deed, had overstayed her limit.

The Crosbys, singly and as a
group, belie their reputation for
arrogance, flippancy and wild
ness. If they were swingers five
years ago, they have changed.
Each is soft spoken, well-man
nered and, yes, subdued.
The burden of their famous
name, which each admits now was
more handicap than asset, has
tempered their personalities and
wrenched their careers in dif
ferent ways.
Gary, the eldest, is the only one
who is still happily married.

ture since before he was mar
ried.
"I was interested mostly in the
French impressionist school and
starting reading about it," he
said. "But the French impres-

The personable singer dines
out at filmland restaurants once
or twice a week. But he and his
wife also like to entertain at
small dinner parties in their
home. Sometimes Andy cooks,
My cooking is just steaks,
he said. "It's simple to cook
steaks. Just get good meat, pour
salt and pepper on it and put it
on the grill. In our kitchen we
built a large dutch oven thing."
Andy said, "I'm in good shape"
when asked about his career.
"The records are doing unbe
lievably well, he said. It .used
to be that I'd be happy If I sold
150.000 albums. But my 'Days of
Wine and Roses' album is over
million and so is the 'Moon
River" album."
Andy's offstage personality was
probably best described recently
by a man who was formerly as
sociated with Williams in the
singer s career.
I've never worked for a nicer
guy, he said.

After three years he says, "Bar
bara and I are sailing along
smoothly. "We're very happy and

Once the ringleader of the fam-
singing group, Gary broke
away from his brothers shortly
before his marriage and struck
out as a single. Overweight and
illness forced him to retire tem
porarily from show business.
In the past year Gary lost
eight, resumed his singing ca
reer and will star this season in
the new "Bill Dana" television
series.
Gary and Barbara live in the
San Fernando, Valley with Bar
baras 8-year-old son, Steve, by a
previous marriage. Gary has
adopted the boy.
Dennis, who made headlines in
.paternity suit, is balding, shy
and hopeful that he can salvage
his marriage.
I feel sure Pat and I will get
back together ,agaln," he says. .
Dennis works in a production
capacity for Bing Crosby produc
tions at Desilu studios, and plans
some day to produce a television
series .for his father's company.
He has no desire to return to per
forming.
Phil is under contract to Frank
Sinatra's Reprise recording com
pany and recently cut two new
songs, a rock 'n' role rendition of
his father's famed "When the
Blue of the Night Meets the Gold
of the Day," and a country ver
sion of "Little by Little.
Philip and his wile, Sandra
Drummond, went to ,the divorce
courts in June of this year. They
are the parents of Dixie Lee, 4,
and Brian Patrick, 3.
Lindsay, the youngest of Bing's
first family, has followed the
course of his older twin brothers.
He married a Las Vegas show
girl (as they did) and has since
been divorced.
His wife Barbara went to court
last year. They have a son, Da
vid, 3.
Lindsay's health was a .primary
factor in the dissolution of the
trio. He suffered a nervous
breakdown in October, 1962, a
was hospitalized. It has taken
him a year to regain his health,
and to slow down the fast paced
life he led after he and Barbara
separated.
Lffiny, as they call him, lives
in Palm Desert, Calif., at the
home of a close family friend,
Pete Pepito, near Ins father's
house in the Palm Springs area.
This month Lindsay and Pepito
will open an Italian delicatessen in
the desert community.
The young Crosby said , he
might return to show business
some day, but not before studying
music and acting. '
Friendly With Dad
Bing'a sons are on friendly
terms with their dad, but do not
see ihim very often. Papa Crosby
still is busy with his own career.
and as often as time allowed Der

Nathaniel) hie off to the Crosby
manse at the tip of Baja Califor
nia. There Is virtually no chance
that the four Crosby sons .will
ever appear together again as en
tertainers. Only Gary and Phil
(who are the least friendly among
the brothers) are determined to
stay in show business.
Financially, none need worry,
each boy received $50,000 in 1942
from their parents to set up trust
funds. Their mother's estate pro
vided for a quarter of a million
dollars each.
