' MOUNT SHASTA The Mount
Shasta Horsemen's Club will take
a journey Oct. 6 into a region
where history was made during
" gold rush days. It will be a ride
from Castle Lake to t h e Mt.
Bradley lookout station led by
Charles Holcomb, president.
Members will take horses by
trailer to Castle Lake, have lunch
and then ride the historic trail to
the lookout. In this area was
fought one of the bloody pioneer
battles with Indians and Joaquin
Miller was wounded.
Point of origin, Castle Lake,
is so deep it frightened Indians
who believed it was the abode
of spirits. The depth reaches 122
feet, according to Joseph Wales,
California biologist who studied
the lake for two decades.

NEW YORK lUPP-It might be
said of Dianne Valvo that she has
a hair-raising job.
The vivacious brunette takes
over when nature leaves off and
a female starts to bald. She is an
expert who for 17 years has been
using hairpieces to disguise fern
inine baldness ranging from a
spot no larger than a dime to
complete coverage of a bald pate.
There's no age range for feminine
baldness, she said. She's had cus
tomers from ages two to 95.
"Baldness among women is on
the increase." she said. "Some
dermatologists estimate there has
been a 500 per cent increase in
the last five years."
"Dermatologists offer a variety
of reasons for it," she continued,
"radiation, vitamin deficiency,
heredity, old age when the hair
just naturally thins, the pace of
modern living, emotional upset.
"I heard of one case of a wo
man losing her hair overnight
after a death in the family.
Reasons for Baldness
"And there are some dermatol
ogists who speculate that one fac
tor may he woman's emancipa
tion. She is taking on male re
sponsibility in the job world and
following the male into baldness.
I Dr. Irw in I. Lubowe. associate
clinical professor of dermatology.
New York Medical College-Metropolitan
Hospital Center, and der
matologist also with Flower-Fifth
Avenue Hospital, mentions the fe
male taking on masculine roles as
a factor. Women smoke, women
drive cars, he says, and in other
ways follow the man's pattern of
behavior.
(Dr Lubowe. author of a num
ber of medical journal papers on
baldness and of the hook, "New
iHope For Your Hair," agreed
w ith Miss Valvo there is a mark
ed increase in baldness among
women. He listed as possible
causes hormonal imbalance, here
dity, nervous system, localized in
fection, overuse of hair cosmetics
such as lacquer, and too much
pulling with modern hairdressing
methods.
"In one paper published in
"Soap. Perfumery and Cosmet
ics, in May of this year, Dr.
Lubowe discussed "traction alo
pecia," or balding due to the use
of the "pony tail," tight braiding
of the hair, and curling on rollers
and bobby pins.
("Owing to continuous mechani
cal strain and pulling of the hair
shaft by mechanical devices, the
shaft is drawn out of the follicle
and, in severe cases, the hair loss
may be permanent," the paper
added.
Whatever the cause for bald
ness, "women become absolutely
hysterical when it occurs." said
Miss Valvo in an interview. "They
need understanding, yet must be
made to icalize they are not the
only ones this has happened to."
"On their first visit la me, I
mostly let them cry it out," she
said.
Mali Orders. To
Miss Valvo is consultant on
hair problems for Charles of the
Rita, cosmetics manufacturers
and operators of a chain of
beauty salons. She said about 30
per cent of her work is done by
mail.
"I ask women to send me pho
tos to 6tart with, or ij they're too
embarrassed to have the prints
made in their home town, we do
them here," she added.
In addition, a mail order cus
tomer does her own measuring
for a partial or full wig with a
five-step rhart Miss Valvo has de
veloped, and either encloses a
sample of her hair or indicates
her color and in turn is sent sev
eral samples from which to
choose.
Customers have included a New
York society girl who made herizes in production of industrial ex-
debut this summer, a successful
fashion model fitted with total
scalp cover, film stars whose
hair has been bleached so often
the result is nearly total fallout
temporarily, a youngster fitted
with a wig when she was 2 and
with larger wigs as she grew up,
mental patients, and patients tem
porarily bald in one spot because
of head surgery. Customers come
from all parts of the United
States, from Europe, South Amer
ica, as far away as Israel.
A native of Middleburg, Conn..
Miss Valvo in private life is mar
ried to Allwrt Johnson, who de
signed the sets for a number of
Broadway hits and now special-
travaganzas.
The hair consultant must be the
envy of some of her balding cus-'
tomers. Miss Valvo's chestnut
brown locks, worn in a halo braid,
reach well below her waist when
they're down.

Overbid
Works Out
By OSWALD JACOBY
Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
North's raise to two spades is
eminently correct by modern bid
ding methods. He is not strong
enough to try two clubs and he
should avoid a no-trump call with
two suits conspicuously unstopped.
South's three diamond rebid
was close. Most players would
have settled for a part score, hut
South had fallen in love with his
hand. Therefore, after North
merely returned to three spades
South continued right on to game.
This last bid was a real flir-j
tation with the undertaker, but(
everything worked out beautifully. I
After all, every overbid isn't '
punished. I
South won the opening heart'
lead and counted four sure losers!
unless he could do something
about his second heart. There
w as a place for H and South's I
first play was a club to dum
mv's queen. The finesse worked
and South was able to park his
losing heart on the ace of clubs.
A spade lead was won by
West's jack and the heart continu
.ation ruffed by South.
This left him with only three
trumps, but South gambled when
he bid four spades. He wasn't go
ing to give up when victory was
within his grasp. He led a second
spade from his own hand. East's
queen lost to West's king and
another heart lead left South with
only one trump.
It also left him with his con
tract. He showed his hand and
announced, "I will play diamonds.
Take your ace of trumps when
ever you want to."
