Wife Slain,
Body Sealed
Behind Wall
LOS ANGELES (UPII-A 72-
year-old man was arrested on a
murder warrant Saturday for the
strangulation slaying of his wife,
Mrs. Anna Lewis, 70, whose body
was found sealed behind a wall in
their home.
Officers said Joseph J. Lewis.
sought since the discovery of the
body by detectives on Sept. 12,
w as taken into custody and would
undergo questioning about the
slaying In the Highland Park
district.
Lewis, husband of I he victim
for 42 years, told police early
(his month w hile they were search
ing for the then-missing woman
that she had been "unfaithful to
me." Police said he disappeared
Sept, 11 the day before the dis
covery of his wife's body.
Police said an autopsy showed
the woman had been strangled
and that her slayer also had in
flicted blows about the head of
the victim.
Mrs. Lewis was last seen alive
in Chicago Aug. 13 when she
boarded a plane in Chicago after
visiting with relatives. Her daugh
ter reported her missing Sept. 9.
Police said that when they be
gan their search for the missing
woman Ihey found only Lewis liv
ing in the home. When questioned,
he denied knowing the where
abouts of his wife, against whom
he had filed for divorce.
But later while searching the
house after Lewis disappeared
police discovered new plaster that
had been painted over, was mask
ing a wall bed. They dug through
the plaster and found the body.
