83,000 homemaker consultants arc
at it again, dogging manufactur
ers to improve their products.
Many of their suggestions are
on packaging: Some are about the
product itself; others are purely
wife-savers on the labor front.
The consultants are the part
time workers for National Family
Opinion, Inc., a Toledo, Ohio, con
sumer research firm. Their new
est list of "why don't they?"
ranges from improvements in rain
wear to home sewing suggestions.
One housewife wrote, "why
don't they?" make plastic rain
hoods with small shoulder capes
attached for belter protection in
wet weather.

Make the appearance of dress-,
ing rooms' in stores match the ap
pearance of the dress depart
ment itself. The dress sections
might be glossy, appealing and ex
pensively done, but fitting rooms
look like the. hangover of a bar

to the shopper who often sheds
her shoes to step into a garment
instead of pulling it over her head.
Put cotton lace trim on cotton
clothes. Ever try to iron cotton

Hake loops large enough at the
neck or collar end of sports shirts
so the wearer can button w ithout
tearing off the loop.
Make loops in the center back
of women's coats as they do
men's, for secure hanging when
regular coat hangers are not
available.
Fasten . the size label of a
garment, especially in children's
clothes, so that it will not pull
or wash out. While at it, why
don't they put sock sizes on both
socks with an indelible dye? In
homes where children's socks are
nearly the same size, sorting be
comes a problem.
Mark special waxed paper for
wrapping sandwiches, with per
forations to mark the length need
ed for the average sandwich. When
wrapping sandwiches for child
ren's lunch, for instance, paper
often is wasted because it's torn
too long or too short.
Make baby food jars the same
size at the top as at the sides so
no food is left in the jar.
Manufacture a granulated no
calorie or low-calorie sweetener
witli the same bulk as sugar.
Good for diabetics or dieters.
Then, sugar-free cookies, cakes
and other desserts could be made
with favorite and familiar recipes
and "sugared" desserts would be
possible again.

Rcid peered through a blinding
rainstorm Tuesday night and saw
an automobile ahead of him in
trouble. He veered his bus to
miss the car. The 43-passengcr
Scenic-cruiser overturned and 27
persons were injured. '

rious condition today.

Jail Term
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UPD-
John Montciro, 23, wants to go
to jail. Terminal Island Prison at
Los Angeles, Calif., to be exact.
Why? His wife Carmen is serv
ing three to five years there for
passing bad checks and he wants
to join her.
Monteiro appeared before Supe
rior Court Judge Ralph E. Moody
on a charge of assault. He plead
cd guilty and asked to be sent
to Terminal Island.
Moody noted that Montciro had
appealed in court 42 times since
1958, and agreed to send him to
jail for five years cut he didn't
specify which one.

a gust of wind blew him to the
left side of Uie road.
Reid, of Oklahoma cily, turned
his wheel to avoid the car, and
skidded on the rain-slick road.
The bus overturned and came to
a halt astride the center line of
U. S. Highway 66.
"I felt the bus sliding," Mrs.
Audrey Wutrlch of Tacna, Ariz.
said. "Tlie next thing I knew, I
was on the bottom. A lady was
wedged on top of me along with
a lot of suitcases. There was
glass everywhere." -
Greyhound officials estimated
damage to the tius at $10,000.
The bus was on a schedule from
St. Louis to Los Angeles and had
just made a stop in Shamrock.
Vacant Lot Fire
City firemen Tuesday afternoon
extinguished a grass fire in a
vacant lot at 424 Market Street.

The Roundup officially started
at 1:15 p.m. at the main arena
although cowboys began compet
ing in the first go-around at 8
a.m. Oliver, leading money win
ner this year on the national rodeo
circuit and a former Roundup All-
Around Cowboy winner, was
scheduled to begin his quest of
the calf roping title this morning.
Other arena events in the rodeo
are bareback bronc riding, steer
wrestling, bull riding, steer roping
and saddle bronc riding.
The colorful Eastern Oregon
pageant also includes cowboy
breakfasts, two beauty contests
for Indian girls, western dances,
parades, street shows and Indian
ceremonial dances.
