at the workman's shirt.

David Strickler, 4r, was busy
talking to a truck driver Wednes
day when the boy appeared. He
told the lad he was too young to
play with a knife.
But the boy kept tugging at his
shirt and staring up at the two
men and asking for a knife.
Finally, little Bobby SmiUi
stoppifd their conversation. "But
I have to cut my sister down.

The two shocked men looked
across the way to a playground
where Bobby pointed.
In the middle of a group of
boys and girls running around
and playing, two-year-old Mi
chelle Hoeppner was hanging
from a clothesline tied to a play
ground slide.
Strickler and the truck driver
ran to the playground, loaned
over a five-foot fence, and cut the
girl down. Strickler put her on
the ground and applied moulh-tu-mouth
resuscitation while the
trucker called tlie police.
Bobby's half-sister was report
ed in fair condition today at Me
morial Hospital.

William J. Easier, 72, indicted
by the grand jury last spring on
two counts of contributing In the
delinquency of a minor and on
another charge of obtaining poli
cy by false pretense, will appear
in the circuit court at Bend next
Monday to go on trial for one
of those charges, the Herald and
News learned today.
The three criminal matters
were scheduled for the Bend
court by Judge Lyle Wolff last
May upon the request of the de
fendant's attorney for a change

In the forthcoming trial, Easter
will answer charges that h re
ceived $125 from a fire insurance
company after filing an allcgd

Earlier this summer, a Bend

guilty for Easter on one of the
contributing counts. He will stand
trial on the other contributing
charge later this year.

of perjury and conspiracy to ob-

A federal grand jury accused
Cohn, 36. and another attorney,
Murray E. Gottcsman. 56, of ly
ing, trying to get witnesses in a
stock fraud case to change their
testimony, and using intermedi
aries to threaten other w itnesses.
He faces up to 40 years in prison
and fines totaling $36,000 if con
victed. The charges arose from a se
ries of earlier grand jury probes
involving the United Dye and
Chemical Corp. stock manipula
tions in which the public was
fleeced of more than $5 million
in unregistered security sales.
Cohn was scheduled for a hear
ing next Wednesday before Fed
eral Judge William B. Herlands

Spy Story Denied, Torture Claimed

took back his story cf being
Castro spy Wednesday and told
police he was tortured for 12,
hours and forced to make "false
statements."
"All the statements in my con
fession, including the part where
I said I was going to be sent
to Cuba as a spy for lne counter
intelligence agency, were false,"
the 34-year-old exile told Miami
police. "The whole thing was
false."
He said he made the confes
sion alter being tortured for 12
hours while a 45-caliher automa
tic pistol was held at his head.
