But the job didn't exactly j;j
according to schedule.
The 3 1-2-ton bronze statue was
severely damaged during last

The return trip to Salem wa.

that the new stainless steel
mounting bolts were a half an

The statue had to be removed,
and a elder was called to extend
the bolts.
It took an hour to get the job
done, and at 3:30 p.m. the statue
was again hoited atop the pedes

While the trip to Salem was un
eventful, it was not without wor

special low-bed trailer was used,
and the huge statue made its way
under freeway overpasses with
little more than an inch to spare.
About 50 tourists and state em
ployes were on hand to watch
the slatue being replaced.

By ANN LANDERS
Dear Ann Landers: I'm a 17-
year-old boy who hopes you can
solve my problem or lead me
to someone who
will.
My voice is
high-pitched and
weak. 1 sound
like a girl. It
has always been
this way, b u t
it seems to be
getting worse.
I'm becoming so self-conscious
about it that I never answer the
phone unless I absolutely have to.
This is not my imagination, Ann.
People are always mistaking me
for my younger sister. Opera
tors frequently say. "Yes, ma'm."
I hate to speak in class be
cause ot my voice. .My grades
slipped last year because I'd rath
er shake my head no than to give
the right answer.
People say I'm not bad looking.
I have a good build, am a neat
dresser and have a pleasant per
sonality, but my voice is ruining
my life. Can you suggest help (or
me? DAVID
Dear David: First gilta doc
tor and find out If there is some
tning organically wrong. If you
get a clean bill of health ask the
doctor to suggest a speech clinic,
You can strengthen your- vocal
cords just as you can strengthen
other parts of your body.
Voice lessons will give you con
fidence. Your Insecurity Is a ma
jor part of your problem.
Dear Ann Landers: The letler
about the neighbor with 38 cats
was too much. These people never
had it so good. Please ask them
if thev would like to trade houses
with us.
For five years we have lived
next door to a character who has
parlayed two poodles into 48 dogs
of different sizes, colors and
breeds (German Schnauzers, Brit
tany Spaniels and Toy Poodles.)
This is asking a great deal of a
five-room bungalow.
The enterprise is advertised as
follows in the local paper
"Stud service, clipping, and
puppies available." The stench is
unbearable especially on hot
days when the wind is from the
south. The yapping and barking
is enough to drive a person to
the brink, which is where 1 am
at the moment.
Yes, we have complained to the
authorities and the situation has
been investigated. But it was de
cided that the people are operat
ing within the law since their
dogs are a "hobby." When the
ads were presented as evidence
that they are also in busi
ness, we were told that it is per
fectly all right to make money on
hobby.
What do we do next? DOG
TJHED
Dear Tired: Organize the neigh
borhnod for some red-hot political
action. If enough of you put heat
on the city council or (he zoning
board you will probably get results.
Dear Ann Landers: This prob
lem concerns my brother Tim w ho
is 11 years old. Or perhaps my
mother is the real problem.
Tim is dreadfully overweight.
He has been putting on the pounds
steadily since he was about
years old. Now he is so heavy he
looks terrible. The boy cats all
day long and mom takes delight
in getting him to clean his plate.
Then she piles on more food. I
have told her she should put Tim
on a diet and 'she" says, "It's
only baby fat. He'll outgrow it."
I'm deeply concerned about this
because I know it is unhealthy
for anyone to carry around so
much excess weight. Please tell
me what should be done. TIM'S
SISTER.
Dear Sister: Your brother
should be put on a diet by a dnc
lor. This is no baby-fat problem.
The hoy probably eats out of frus
tration and anxiety. Your physi
cian will tell your mother If
diet is sufficient or If the hoy
needs professional help, as well
Ann Landers will be glad to
help you with your problems
Send them to her in care of this

There was a story the other

promoted a campaign to have
candidates for local offices in the
Covington area take an 1Q test.
Their average grade was 19.3,
which is slightly below the intel

standing theory of mine.
I won't discuss the theory here
however, for (car of offending

At any rale, now that Trimble

Danger! The entire northwest
is now flagged as a oritical fire hazard area
This summer there is enough dead timber lit
tering the forest floor in the Pacific Northwest
to build almost a year's supply of new homes.
Hot winds and low humidity have dried this
blow-down to the ignition point. Right now it's
ready to fuel one of the worst forest fires on
record. If a fire gets started in this debris, mil
lions of acres may be devastated and whole
communities could be burned out.
For this reason, the state forester has closed
much wider areas of both public and private
forest lands to public use. These fire closures
will run through September, and longer if
necessary. They are absolutely vital to preven
tion of a major fire disaster this year.
Your help is needed. Please respect all areas
of closure. Report all "smokes" you see when
traveling through forest areas.
Whenever possible build campfires only in
facilities provided for them. Make doubly sure
they are out when you leave. Never leave any
fire unattended. Watch matches and cigarettes
more carefully than
usual. With your
help we can prevent
a major fire disaster
this year and con
tinue to enjoy the
benefits of our forest
resources wood,
water, wildlife, rec
reation and payrolls.
