Oregon's Neutrality Could Enhance Hatfield's Darkhorse Position

gon delegation to the Republican
National Convention in San Fran
cisco next summer.

Under Oregon law. delegates
are required to support the" win
ner of Oregon's May 15 presi
dential primary election.
The liw requires delegates to
slick with the primary victor for
the first two ballots until r.
leased, or until their candidate
receives less titan 35 per cent of
the convention vote.

cated." Hatfield, 41, has indicated he
will not direct his support to any
one Republican until the state's
voters indicate their choice at the
primary.

If South had been the declar
er, he would probably have
reached his four spade contract
without any adverse bidding and
he almost surely would have
tried the heart finesse and gone
down.
Fortunately for South he was
second hand. He reached four
spades, but there had been an
opening diamond bid by East.
South won the first diamond and
his analysis of the lead was low
from four to the jack. A review of
the bidding marked East with the
king of hearts as part of his
opening bid, so South was cer
tain that the heart finesse would
not work.
Then how was he going to
make the hand? One way would
be to take the heart finesse
anyway and then hope to break
the hearts 3-3 so as to set up two
heart tricks in dummy, but South
saw a better way. He assumed
that trumps would break 4-2 and
in that case he didn't really care
if hearts broke 3-3 or 4-2 as long
as East held the king.
He won the diamond lead, led his
eight of hearts and let it ride
East won with the ten and cashed
one diamond before leading the
king of clubs.
South won that trick with the
ace and led a heart to dum
my's ace. East dropped the king
whereupon South ruffed a low
heart in his hand and drew
trumps, stopping in dummy.
Then he discarded two clubs on
dummy's last two hearts and
conceded one club trick at the
finish.

K. Kennedy to have opposition on
the Democratic side.
This is a reverse of the po
litical situation in I960 when for
mer Vice President Richard Nix
on dominated Republican thinking,
and the Democrats had a wide
open power battle.
In 18ti0 Appling listed Nixon and
New York Gov. Nelson Rocke
feller on-the Republican ballot,
but Rockefeller withdrew.
On the Democratic ballot Ap
pling listed then Sens. Kennedy
and Lyndon B. Johnson, tlie iate
Sen. Estcs Kefauver, Adlai Ste
venson, and Sens. Huliert Hum
Dhrevs and Stuart Symington.
Oregon Sen. Wayne Morse got on
the ballot by petition. Stevenson
and Kefauver both filed with
drawal statements.

nominations.

the role of a neutral, and Ap

litical stage will be focused in

Iron Canyon Reservoir areas of
the company's McCloud-Pit hydro
electric plant.
PG&E said it is sponsoring in

the reservoir sites in Shasta
