OUR ANCESTORS tyQuincy
The statement was issued as
Oregon was preparing to observe
National Child Salcty Week, spon
sored by tlie American Safety
League, set for September 4
through 11. Tlie special week has
been set aside to arouse public
awareness of the need to exer
cise special caution wnile driving
during the opening weeks of the
school year.
In a letter proclaiming the ob
servance of the special week in
Oregon. Gov. Mark 0. Hatfield
urged "parents, teachers, police,
school and safety officials and
the public generally to combine
in an eflort to educate our school
children in safe travel habits
while walking or riding bicycles.
"Moreover, there is obviously
need for alertness on the part of
motorists in school zones, near
playgrounds, or any area where
groups of children are active.
"I would hope that each Ore
gonian will cooperate in every
possible manner, not only during
this special week but throughout
the year, in making our streets
and highways safe for all of our
citizens and in endeavoring to
reduce the needless toll of acci
dents and fatalities."
