Scout Leaders Plan
To Attend Session

Conference of professional Boy
Scout leaders Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at
the University of Illinois.
More than 3,500 professional
scout leaders are expected for the
conference at the university in
Champaign, III.
The delegation from Oregon
will include Gale Staley and Dan
Hitchcock, both district scout
executives from Klamath Falls,
and Boyd Karrer, district 6cout
executive from Bend.

Not Guilty
To Robbery
Judge Donald A. W. Piper re
ceived a plea of not guilty from a
37-year-old Elkton, M1.. man
charged with robbery by means
of force and violence' and set
Sept. 24 as the date for the trial
it developed Thursday in circuit
court.
The accused is Lawrence Glen
Weed. 30. who was named on one
of six secret indictments which
were returned by the grand jury,
along with three true bills, to Cir
cuit Judge David R. Vandenberg
last Aug. 15. Bail has been set at
$7,500.
Weed is charged with attacking
Pete Emil Larson, of the Lake
Hotel, on the evening of July 31
and relieving him of his wauet,
containing $30.
Witnesses allegedly told police
that they observed the two men
step from a cab and saw Weed
knock down his companion, grab
the victim's wallet, and run from
the scene. One of the witnesses
overtook Weed and held him for
citv police. He was arrested on
the robbery charge and the victim
was booked for being drunK.
Crash Injures
California Man

Firemen Called
Klamath Falls firemen answered
three calls Saturday, all to extin
guish grass firea. There was no
damage caused by any of the
blazes.

During the week-long confer
ence, tlie scout executives will
receive information on the exten
sion of the scouting program. The
men will attend more than 100
workshops and discussion groups
and exhibits and displays will
feature the latest in camping
equipment.
In addition to I lie more than
3,500 executives expected for the
conference, 2,400 wives and chil
dren will atlendand there will be
a special program for them.

Thalidomide
But Suffering Continues

Just a year after Europe's
great "thalidomide scare, tight
ened drug laws and the passage
of time appear to have ended a
tragic harvest o f cruelly de
formed babies.
But sorrow, sulfering and bit
terness linger.
In Europe, it is estimated
about 6.000 infants were born be
tween 1958 and the end of li2
as phocomcliacs, or "seal ba
les." These children, many of
them, came into the world with
no arms, or flipper - like appen
dages where their arms were
supposed to be, or with other:
horrible deformities.
Exact official figures are lack
ing, but the drug thalidomide
was blamed for many of the de
formed births to mothers who
had taken the German-discovered
and developed drug during preg
nancy. Tile greatest damage was done
in West Germany where, accord
ing lo the Federal Health Minis
try, about 5,000 "thalidomide ba
bies were born up to the end
of last year, of whom 3,184 are
still living.
The drug first was introduced
: West Germany in 1957 and
was used on a wide scale. Un
der a variety of names "conter-
gan" "Distaval" and Softenon
were among the best known itl
spread to markets throughout
most of Europe and to other
parts of the world.
It never was marketed without
prescription In the United States
where approval was withheld by
the federal Drug and Health Ad
ministration. But it could bo ob
tained by Americans from Eur
ope. One result was the widely-
publicized case of Mrs. Sherrl
Finkbinc, 30 - year old Phoenix
Arizona, housewife who flew to
Sweden last August to undergo
legal abortion there because
she had taken thalidomide dur
ing pregnancy and refused to risk
having a malformed child.
Thalidomide was first produced
by Chemie Gruncnthal, one of
Germany's most highly respected
chemical firms, in 1953. After
exhaustive tests It was approved
by official clinics and placed on
the market in 1957. Its attributes
were remarkable. It was a high
ly effective sedative that could
be taken with no known after
effects; it was an effective slecp-
mduccr. i

'wonder drug." As early as the
autumn of I960, German doctors
were disturbed by a sudden in
crease in deformed births in the
country. By November, 1961, Dr.
Widikund l.cnz of Hamburg, a
specialist ill childbirth and child
care, thought he knew the rea
son. On Nov. 16, 11, he tele
phoned the Grunenthal firm at
its head office in Stolbcrg and
expressed his fears. He urged the
company to withdraw tonler

was soid in Germany, from the
market.
On Nov. 19, Gruncnthal with
drew it.
In rapid succession other coun
tries withdrew the various thalid
omide drugs from their markets.
Then the loll in malformed ba
bies was counted. In Britain
there were no over-all official
figures but competent eslimates
ran as high as 800 "ical babies
born before the drii.j was with
held; 53 were officially con
firmed. Sweden counted 153 de
formed births up to the end of
1962. with 111 confirmed as born
to "thalidomide mothers. Hol;
land had 16. Norway 19. Austria

has been recovered.
The latest suspect. Robert Wil
liam Pelham. 26. of London, was
booked at tho Aylesbury police
station, operations center for the
investigation, with receiving $1,
542.800 of the stolen monev.
