one of Hie few New Yorkers who
can walk to work from his own
house," says Bennelt Cerf, the
erudite publisher. His home is
modernized throughout. It has its
own private garden and is located
nn posh East 62nd street, II blocks
from Cerf's office.
For 21 years now the polished
publisher has walked to Random
House headquarters which he es
tablished back in 1925 with part
ner Donald Klopfer.
Good-Natured Guy
Despite his reputation as a mil
lionaire president of Random
House publishing company, Cerf
is known to uncounted teleview
ers as the good-natured guy on
the "What's My Line" panel.
However, his role as punster
and fall guy on he show takes
up only a fraction of his time.
In addition to running his busi
ness Cerf travels around the
country giving 30 or so lectures
a vear on humor and the world
of books.
He has written eight books him
self and has edited two antholo
gies. He's also on the board of
directors of M-G-M Studios.
These things he discusses rou
tinely, but mention his private
home in the heart of New York
and Cerf waxes ecstatic.
"Living in a private house is
wonderful," he said. "And I get
plenty of exercise walking up and
down the stairs. We have five
stones and no elevator."
Most of the floors are restrict
ed to two rooms.
The ground floor contains a
dining room and kitchen and a
small office. The second floor is
one enormous living room-library
with almost all the available wall
space covered with books.
Best Decoration
"Books are the best way to
decorate a house," Cerf contends.
"My joy in life is rearranging
them, I usually quit in the mid
dle of it all, leaving the books
heaped in the center of the room
for Phyllis to put away."
However comfortable the town
house may be. it is usually de
serted bv the Cerfs on weekends.

accepted the movie colony as his
natural habitat after two years
of starring in a video series
while maintaining his permanent
home in New Jersey.
Joey wasn't sure he would
make good in Hollywood, and in
the event he failed he was de
termined to have a home to re
turn to in the east.
This summer he will move into
new three - bedroom Beverly
Hills manse complete with guest
house and maid's room. His
neighbors will be movie mogul
Jack L. Warner and Oscar win
ner Ernie Borgnine. Naturally,
his new status symbol includes
a swimming pool.
"My show is going into its
third year," Bishop said after
inspecting his new abode, "but
nobody ever said it was a hit

in Englcwood (N.J.) is up for
sale."
Joey bought the Cape Cod-style
home eight years ago on bor
rowed money. It is only 15 min
utes across the George Washing
ton Bridge from Manhattan. He's
going to miss the old place.
The move will mean that Joey's
only offspring, Larry. 15, will
transfer to Beverly Hills High
School next semester. It also
means Joey and his wife, Sylvia,
will move from the house they've
been renting in California.
"It was getting altogether too
expensive renting a house here
and making the payments on the
other one back east," Bishop
said.
The change won't be too dras
tic for the comedian because

A favorite get-together for joey
and Sylvia (married 22 years)
are Sunday night lox and bagel
parties. Joey is proud of the fact
that Max Asnas. owner of Man
hattan's Stage Delicatessen, flies
into Hollywood frequently loaded
down with goodies.
"The last time he came out
here he brought 11 pounds of
chopped chicken liver in his suit
cases, 10 pastramies, two corned
beefs, 8 salamies and some
smoked sturgeon," Joey grinned.
"That night we had a party
just like we used to have in New
York. When our friends heard
about the food they came flock
ing over."

A landmark at Hollywood and
Vine, the crossroads of the en-
tertainment world, is currently
undergoing a metamorphosis
which will add glamour and lus
ter to Hollywood's internationally
known intersection.
The transformation is taking
place on Vine Street, a half block
above Hollywood Boulevard, with
in the historic walls of the .17-
year-old El Capitan Theater. Af
ter refurbishing and moderima
lion, it will be known as The
Jerrv Lewis Theater and serve!
as the showcase for his weekly,
two-hour live TV show.
The light (ixutres, wiring, seats,
walls, dressing rooms, plumbing,
flooring and the old stage have
been pulled out.
Ill their place when "The Jerrv
Lewis Show" debuts Saturday,
Sept. 21, will be deep-piled red
carpets, luxurious blue divans, a
gold stage curtain, a new stage,
gold seats and 350 individual
sjwakers. one for every two peo
ple in the audience.
A modern walnut-paneled tran
sistorized control room is being
installed. Other all-new technical
equipment includes TK-60 cam
eras, a wireless communications
system and a paging system for
2(i dressing rooms. A "turn ol
the century" marquee illuminated
by 3.000 light hulbs is another ad
ditinn.
Guest stars will "wait nut"
men- appearances in an air-con-
d 1 1 1 o n e d "blue-green room"
equipped w i t h TV monitors,
lounge chairs and divans. The
outdoor rehearsal room, in a pa
tio on the second floor, will have
a portable dance floor and stereo
disc and tape records.
When the theater opened its
doors in l!)2fi, it was Hollywood's
first stage house. Throngs of cel
ebrities, socialites and civic
leaders attended the opening
show "Chariot s Revue, star
ring Beatrice Lillic, English co
median James Buchanan and
dancer named Gertrude Law
rence. Its era as a "legit house'
ended temporarily in 1!M2 when
Cecil B. De Mille held the world
premiere of his m tion picture
"Heap the Wild Wind."

Elke. whose father died when
she was 14 years old, continued
to work at oilier jobs to help sup -
port her mother. Then, tlirec
years ago, Elke and her mother
took a bus trip to Italy for a
vacation.
When we slopped in the '.own
of Viareggion we went to t night
club and an Italian man asked
me to dance," Elke explained.
He gave me a ticket with a
number on it, which later turned
out to be my entry into a beauty
contest they were holding in the
town. Well, I won the contest and
saw my picture in the paper the
next day as Miss Viareggion of
1959.
An Italian director saw it, too.
He rushed up and said he wanted
to put me in the movies. I said.
Oh, sure, and told him to go
away. But he reappeared with his
wife to show he was serious.
A few weeks later Elke was
starring in her first picture. From
Italy she went back to Germany.
France and England to star in
additional films. Now she has a
three-picture contract with Metro
and a bright Hollywood future un
less the police run her out of
town.
It's not that cops don't appre
ciate Like s beauty. It s her driv
ing, especially on the freeways,
that make them go crazy.
So far she has had three traf
fic tickets in a span of six weeks.
"I was warned about the free
ways before I came here," Elke
said innocently. "But they are
nothing compared to the auto-
bahns in Germany. We have no
speed limits at home.

by William C. MacPhail, vice
president, CBS television sports.
Television's original sports an
thology series, "Sunday Sports
Spectacular," made its debut on
the CBS Television Network Jan.
3, I960. In the new season, the
series will be presented in a 30
minute format, 5 to 5:30 p.m.,
PDT, from Oct. 13 through Dec.
29. On Jan. 12 it returns to its
original 90-minute format, 2:30 to
4 p.m., PST, until tlie start of
the baseball season in April when
1 it again returns to 30 minutes
In the 30-minute format start
ing Oct. 13 tlie emphasis will be
placed on immediacy wlicnever
possible, with programs live and
on video tape. One such regular
feature will be same-day high
lights of National Football League
games. Tlie games w ill be video
taped and w ithin minutes after the
final whistle key and exciting
plays will be presented on "Sun
day Sports Spectacular."
The opening program. Oct. 13,
will present same-day NFL high
lights, a portion of tlie Harlem
Globetrotters exhibition in Rome
and a preview of things to come
on the series.
Other programs planned for tlie
fall include a live bowling head-to-head
roll-off match between the
current titlisls of bowling's two
premiere events Don Carter, invi
tational champion, and Dick Web
er, AU-Star champion.
A special football program,
"Seven Days to Kickoff." showing
University of Miami All-America
quarterback George Jlira and his
coach, Andy Gustafson, from the
final whistle on Saturday to kick-
off tlie following Saturday, will
also be presented.
