Falls accountant, won six straight
matches to capture the Second An
nual Klamath Open Chess Cham
pionship this week.
Pete Behr, a 17-vear-old senior
at Klamath Union Hijsh School.
finished second, losing only one
game to Mitchell. In taking sec
ond place. Behr defeated manv
local veterans, including last
year's champion. Wes McKaig.
who finished third.
The tournament was sponsored
by the City Parks and Recreation
Department and the Herald and
News, and Your Store presented
first prize of a hand-carved chess
set to Mitchell.
Junior division results will be
announced later this week.

Merchants Association
Plans Downtown Study
Klamath Merchants Association
has undertaken a study of down
town business conditions which
will result in plans for expansion
ol traffic facilities and other fea
tures of the downtown area.
The project was undertaken with
the approval of the Klamath Falls
City Council and the Klamath
County Court. ,
A committee of 21 downtown
merchants and landowners was
appointed to lend guidance to the
studies.
The lirst part of the detailed
study has begun with the mailing!
of questionnaires to all members
n( the association.
This questionnaire will seek to
determine the trade area of the
Klamath Falls retail merchants
Tlic merchants are asked to
list the northern, southern, east
ern and westernmost towns from
which both regular and occas
ional customers come.
Another part of the study will
be the determinating of traffic
origins and destinations and shop
ping patterns in the downtown
area. To ascertain this informa
tion, another questionnaire will be
distributed.
A final report will be published
wlien all information is gath
ered. Members of the guiding com

cabaret, according to police.
Other dancers in the cabaret
said (lie girl danced the twist for
hours Sunday night before sud
denly falling unconscious. A doc
tor ruled she died of a heart attack.
