Idnight Sun Lights Tour To Lapland
By MURRAY J. BROWN

The sun shines brightly at mid

holm elides to a stop at the mod-

I Actor Shuns
pole Of Idol

PARIS UPI- Egypt's gift to
movies of the western world,
Omar Sharif, Is one new hand
some profile of the silver screen
who is defying demand: ne stren
uously objects to becoming a ma
tinee idol.
The actor of Egyptian films
t , won the proverbial overnight
; ', fame in the West with his role
.' in "Lawrence of Arabia."
.'; Recently Sharif finished a job
j in Spain of acting with ophia
i-'ILoren in 'The Rise and Fall of
J.'the Roman Empire." Now in
J France, the fellow who a year
' ago was not known past the Nile
' River is sharing equal honors
.- ' with veterans Gregory Peck and
Anthony Quinn in "Behold the
Pale 'Horse," being filmed in
Paris and Pau, France.
Receives Many Offers
His dark, good looks have
brought a suitcase full of offers
to play sensual desert lovers on
- horseback. But Sharif Is one new
; : ; matinee idol who is outspoken on
. ; his reluctance to be one.
"No camels, no burnooses.
;-said Sharif in an interview at
;-'his Paris hotel. "If a romantic
part comes along with great
character, yes, but no stupid
-; young lovers.
: "I want to be known as a good
-; character actor, not a lover or
I ; matinee idol. Like Anthony
; - Quinn. No desert love stories.
; -want nice air-contioned Indoors.
1 turned down bon oi Sheik as
tasteless. You have a longer ca-
. reer as a character actor.
Sharif also shows signs of be
coming an offscreen colorful
character. His candid comments
on the "before and after" Sharif
present an interesting portrait of
a man abruptly entering a new
' : life.
Wife Big Star
; In Egyptian films, he said, he
lyaa "not as Important" as his
ye, Faten Hamama, the lead
ing movie queen in Egypt. The
visiting "Lawrence" producers
. -were invited to the couple s home
I'; in Cairo and discovered Sharif
spoke English.
He was tapped for an Impor
.' tant role on condition he hava
a black mole removed from his
: face. He bowed to Hollywood de-
mauds and received "thousands"
; of letters from indignant Egypt
; : ian fans, he said.
; . Sharif appeared to ba enjoying
his new real-life role as the first
;: Egyptian actor to find stardom
.; abroad. He speaks fluent "Brit.
I;3sli" English, French,' Arabic,
I; Spanish and Italian.
:: He hasn't been in Egypt for
:-18 months because of making
' three films abroad. He plans to
; : establish a home in Paris where
he can pursue his newly found
International life. His wife, who
still is back in Cairo, "wants to
stop working" except for an oc
casional film In Egypt now that
; : her husband has hit the Interns-
: tional jackpot.
dinavian Airlines System 'SASI
schedules nightly tourist flights
from Stockholm to Kiruna and
back. The plane leaves Stockholm
Bromma Airport at 9 p.m., and
returns at S a.m., the following
day.
During their brief stop in Ki
runa, passengers are snuttieo oy
motor coach to nearby Jukkas Jar-
vi, a Lapp village, to meet some
villagers, sample native delicacies
and stand eyeball-to-eyeball with
a real Lapland reindeer. A 16th
century church and Lapp museum
are among the things to see.
The local cuisine includes
smoked reindeer meat and an Arc
tic berry Jam.
Live Nomadic Life
The majority of the hardy
Lapps still live the nomadic life,
following their reindeer neras
across the north of Scandinavia.
But. like most Swedes, the Lapps
at Kiruna are at least bilingual
and cheerfully tell about their his
tory and customs in English. They
wear the traditional Lapp costume
of blue, red and yellow with a
red-tasseled cap. I
The flight north, approximate
ly 550 miles. Is far more than
transportation to Kiruna. The two-i
engine plane flies at about 1.500
feet, sometimes lower, while
multi lingual guide describes
points of interest below. A circui
tous, low-level tour of Stockholm,
a pass over the historic univer
sity city of Uppsala, the fir for
ests and log-filled rivers of Swe
den's rich lumbering country, busy
Baltic ports and fishing villages
are among the sights.
At about midnight, the aircraft
crosses the Arctic Circle and
Kebndkajse, Sweden's highest
mountain, comes into view. Pas
sengers are invited to the cock
pit to look at the sunlighted hori
zon ahead and photograph it if
they wish.
Many Photographers
Everyone Is an aerial photogra
pher on the Midnight Sun flight
and the beauteous forests, lakes
and snow-crested mountains of
Sweden's north offer rewarding
subjects. Color film is a must to
capture the rugged terrain sil
houetted against the sun. (Just in
case SAS gives souvenir color
slides to passengers.)
Before touching down at Kiruna
airport, the plane passes over the
vast mountain of iron to which the
Far North city owes its existence.
Large quantities of high-grade
iron ore were discovered there 60
years ago and the early Klon
dike-type mining settlement has
grown into a modern city of 23.000.
Kiruna is the largest city of
the world in administrative area
.038 square miles.
For tourists on a Norwegian holi
day, SAS schedules a similar Mid
night Sun flight nightly between
Oslo and Bodo, an important com
munications center on Norway s
northwest coast. Automobiles take
passengers on to Ronvikfjellet for
spectacular sunlighted view of
the rugged north, including the
cuffs of the Lofoten Islands. A
midnight supper of local cuisine is
served before a crackling log fire
in the tourist chalet.
The cost of either the Stockholm
to Kiruna or Oslo to Bodo round
trip flight is $78. From Copenha
gen, via either Stockholm or Oslo,
the cost is $135.30.
Plant Converts
Water From Sea
PITTSBURGH UPI Your
seswater been tasting different
lately?
That's because of a new tech
nique known as "thin-film vapor
compression," developed by West
inghouse Research Laboratories
to make fresh water from the
sea.
The process, which eventually
could reduce the cost of seawater
conversion below the $l-per-thou-sand-gallon
mark, is an improve
ment on established methods. It
desalts ocean water by changing
it to a vapor and condensing it
back again to a liquid, leaving
salt and other- impurities behind.
The basic principle of salt wa
ter conversion was well known
to scientists. Westinghouse-built
evaporator plants already have
installed a capacity of more than
six million gallons of converted
seawater daily.
The latest development is at
Point Loma flash evaporator
plant of the Office of Saline Wa
ter near San Diego, Cain. Here
a million gallons daily are converted.

Development
Of Jetliner
LONG BEACH, Calif. (UPD-
It is taking something as prosaic
as roller skstes to get the 560-mile-an-hour
DCS jetliner off the
ground.
Douglas Aircraft Co. officially
started work on the twin-Jet craft
last April with the first test flight
scheduled for early in 1965.
Ironically development of the
fast-flying DC9 was being slowed
down by the hum-drum routine of
'delivering blueprints to engineers
working in the 600,000 square loot
facility. Hundreds of hours were
wasted while engineers waited for
'delivery of blueprints from one
part of the new Donald W. Doug
las Engineering Center to anoth
er.
Douglas solved the problem
roller skates.
The Idea was first used by the
firm during World War II at a
plant on Manchester Avenue
Four messengers skated up and
down the halls there from 1041-44
i another period when speed was
essential in processing engineer
ing documents.
Douglas again called upon the
method during the Korean War
and used roller skating messen
gers at its El Segundo. Calif., fa
cility from 1049 to 19K.
Now three teen-age girls, clad
In capri pants, deliver blueprints
oi tne dcs to experts in less than
half the time required on foot.
Plant officials said a future pre
requisite for messengers here
would be an ability and willing
ness to roller skate.
Science Seeks
More Women
MADISON, N.J. (UPI) - The
number of women training for ca
reers in science is increasing, but
not rapidly enough.
So says Dr. William G. Torpey,
manpower specialist, Office of
Emergency Planning, the federal
government.
Torpey, writing In the current
issue of "University Woman,"
said additional numbers of wom
en should be enrolled in collegiate
programs to "meet even current
demands" for scientists.
He predicted there would be
opportunities for considerable
additional numbers of women" in
the field. He added that "a fun
damental reason for the very
small number. . .is traditional
(although seemingly irrational)
attitude that science is a man's
field."
The "University Woman" Is a
quarterly magazine published on
the campus here of Fairleigh
Dickinson University.
