Mickey Cohen Suffers
Beating From Inmate

Wednesday bv a fpllnur inmara at
the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary.
Cohn's condition was described
by the Justice Department in
Washington as "very serious"
and Warden E. M. Heritage said
a neurologist was examining the
California mobster who was serv
ing a 15-year term for tax evasion.
The Justice Department said
Cohen was attacked by an inmate
with a record as a mental patient
who struck Cohen on the head
with a length of pipe.
Heritage said Cohen, transfer
red to the Atlanta prison from
Alcatraz earlier this year, was
struck "two or three licks."
Bo'h Heritage and FBI sources
said they did not think the at
tack had any gangster connec
tions. The Justice Department said
reports indicated that the attack
iwas the result of an argument
Cohen had with the other prison
er.
Heritage said Cohen's blood
pressure and pulse were "pretty
stable."
The attack occurred in one of
the prison shops where Cohen
was working as a helper. Tlie as
sailant ran into the snop and as-
saulted Cohen with the pipe, the
spokesman said.
A spokesman said Cohen's a
sailant is known to authorities at
the prison but his name will not
be made public until an investi
gation by the FBI and the Bureau
of Prisons is complete.
The spokesman said the assail
ant is from a rural community.
The two men had no occasion to
know each other before thev were
in prison, the spokesman said
Macmillan
Tells Facts
To Justice

ister Harold Macmillan Wednesday
gave evidence on the Profumo
scandal to Lord Denning in the
final stage of the judicial probe
into the affair.
"Lord Denning called at his
own request," said a spokesman
at Macmillan's residence. "He
stayed a short time and took fur
ther evidence from the prime
minister."
Denning, the eminent judge
who is conducting the investiga
tion on Macmillan's orders, had
seen the prime minister previ
ously. The investigation originally lim
ited !o the security aspects of the
scandal, was expected to end Wed
nesday afternoon A spokesman
for Denning said Wednesday's
witnesses would be the last of
about 160. Denning hopes to pre
sent his written report to Macmil
lan in the early fall.
Infdrmed sources said Macmil
lan and former War Minister
John Profumo have given testi
mony for Denning"s report.
Profumo's resignation because
of his love affair with call girl
Christine Keeler set off the sen
sational scandal that nearly top
pled Macmillan's government and
led to the Denning investigation
under pressure from the opposi
tion labor party.
Tlie Profumo affair was linked
to the vice case of Dr. Stephen
Ward which filled Britain's news
papers with tales of sex among
the country's upper crust.

one milk production figures in
Oregon's marketing area one are
getting a double check this week
as one of the steps in establishing
individual producer quotas.
The milk audit and stabilization
division of the Oregon Department
of Agriculture completed the mail
ing of letters to 1,413 producers
requesting that they check the ac
curacy o( production figures for
January through April of 1363. The
production figures were those sup
plied by individual handlers. Area
one includes all tne slate except
Malheur, Harney and Curry coun
ties. f producer's quota will be deter
mined by comparing h i s produc-l
tion and class one sales w ith thel
area's total production and total
class one sales during the same
Jour-month period.
The division chief, Kenneth V.
Sawyer, said quotas will be es
tablished and in operation by the
first of October.
Prices set by the department
under the new milk stabilization
act are already in effect.

Fishing Measure Given Title For State Ballot
SALEM (LTD A ballot of title
and statement of purpose were as
signed Wednesday to the steel-
head and salmon fishing initiative
filed recently, Atty Gen. Robert
Italy has the largest represen
tation in the College of Car
dinals of the Roman Catholic
Church.
V. Thornton announced.
The title he assigned states:
"Prohibiting commercial fishing
for salmon, sleelhead."
He lists the purpose as: "Pro
hibits commercial fishing for sal
mon and steelhead in all Oregon
inland waters, including boundary
rivers. Prohibits all commercial
dealings in fish taken illegally."
On Aug. 8 a sportsmen's group
.filed preliminary petitions for an
initiative to close all Oregon in
land waters to commercial sal
mon and steelhead fishing.
If the measure gets on tlie Nov
ember, 14, general election and
is approved by the people, it
would mean the end of commer
cial sjlmon fishing the the Col
umbia River.
The group must obtain 37.096
signatures on petitions by July 2.
