The U.S. Xavy Recruiting Sta
tion in Klamath Falls announced
the recent enlistment of Kenneth
Edwin Park,. 17, son of Mrs. Opal
llariati Doud, 731 .North Elev
enth Street, and Darold Lloyd
Smith, 2210 Radcliffe Avenue.
Park, a former Clovis, Calif.,
resident, and Smith, a KIT grad
uate, are undergoing recruit train
ing at the U.S. Naval Training
Center, Great Lakes, 111. The sea
man recruits will be granted 14
days leave prior to reporting to
their lirst duty assignments.
Marine Pvt. Richard A.
Marks, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R.
'Marts of Route 3, Klamath Falls,
completed four weeks of individ
ual combat training last month
at the Marine Corps Base, Camp
Pendleton. Calif.
The training provides the new
ly enlisted Marine with the ba
sic field and combat skills re
quired of him during his military
service.
Under carefully selected instruc
tors, the Marine learns to take
his place in the small fighting
units, such as the four-man fire
team and the 14-man squad.
Charles C. Daniels, 18, son o(
Air Force Lt. Col. and Mrs.
Charles L. Daniels Jr., of Kingslcy
Air Force Base, was sworn in as
a midshipman in the class of 1067
at the Naval Academy, Annapolis,
Md., on June 26.
He is undergoing summer train
ing, called "plebe summer," at
the academy in preparation for
joining the academy's Brigade ol
Midshipmen in the fall.
The two months of military in
doctrination during the summer
is designed to teach the new
plebcs the ways of the Navy and
Naval Academy. They are taught
Two Circuit
Judges Named
SALEM (UPI) Appointment ol
judges to the two new circuit
court positions created by the MBII
legislature was announced today
by Gov. Mark Hatfield.
Albert R. Musick was named a
Washington county circuit judge,
and Edwin R. Allen as judge of
the new Lane County circuit court
Musick is married and the fath
er of one child. Allen, also mar
ried, is the father of two children
Musick served in the law firm
of Black and Kendall from 1948
to 1962, and was a partner in
Castles and Musick, Beavcrlon
from counter intelligence in World
War II.
Allen served in the firm of Rcid1
and Bartle from 1949 to 1955
from 1955 to 1958 served in the
judge advocate corps of the U.S.
Army, and from 1958 to now was
a partner in the law firm ol
Bartle and Allen.
He served as circuit judge pro
km for 14 days in 1962.

tronics Technician Class "A"
School at Treasure Island, San
Francisco, Calif.
The 38-week course covers the
Iprinciples of electronics, mainte
nance and operation of complex
electronic equipment used
throughout the Navy and includes
troubleshooting procedures.
James E. Peterson, yeoman
third class. USN, son of Mrs.
W. E. Conrady of 2555 Shasta Way,
is serving with the Staff of Com
mander U.S. Navy Forces,, Yoko
suka, Japan.
A graduate of Klamath Union
High School. Peterson entered the
Navy in September, 1961.
Portugal Takes Stand
LISBON. Portugal UPI 'Pre
mier Antonio de Oliveira Salazar
pledged Portugal's determination
Monday night to hold on to its
African territories despite mount'
ing pressure from Western Allies
and independent African nations.
In a nationwide radio and tele
vision broadcast, the 74-ycar-old
premier said Portugal will defend
to the limit of our human and
material resources" its position
in Angola, Mozambique and Por
tuguese Guinea, lt was Salazar's
lirst major policy speech in more
than a year.
He warned the United States it
pursuing a policy in Africa
parallel to that of Russia. Sala
zar called the Russian policy "co
herent and logical" in terms of I
Communist objectives.
But he said U.S. policy "in
volves a serious principle of con
tradiction" because it is brinein '
about the end of European politi
cal influence in Africa and deal

The premier repeated last
year's tiireat that Portugal would

abandon the United Nations. He

man, Republican national com
mitteeman from New York, who
is a Rockefeller political adviser.

Lower Budget Adopted

DUNSMUIR-The Dunsmuir El
ementary School Board has ap
proved a $247,881 budget for the
1963-64 school year, a drop of
$11,341 from last year's elemen
tary school budget.
The enrollment is expected to
be about 580 students, a slight
drop from previous years, and the
lower budget was achieved by
combining classes to reduce the
teaching staff by two and paring
other costs.
This year's budget will allow a
drop of two cents in the ele
mentary school properly tux mak
ing it $1.60 per $100 assessed valu
ation this year, Albert Kempton,
school superintendent, told the
board members.
The Dunsmuir Tire Shop has
been awarded the school bus gaso
line contract for 31' i cents per
gallon, the lower of two bids sub
mitted. Mrs Adelaide Lee will teach
fourth grade next year replacing
Mrs. Yvette Stone who died this
sprin". The school board has not
yet filled the sixth grade position
formerly taught by Mrs. Lee.
