Give Cards
Win Chance
J By OSWALD JACOBY
J Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
r Her is a hand from mv cood
Ifriend Gordon Keel of Vancouver.
'It is another illustration of the i
important principle that an alert '
.declarer gives Uie cards every
.chance.
Gordon points out that North i
.was in an overbidding mood and
'without his very doubtful jump
.raise in hearts the slam would
not have been bid.
; South won the spade opening i
.with his ace and at first glance it
lappeared that success depended
;on the location of tile king of
;clubs. Then he saw an extra
chance and he took Jt. At trick
;two he led the jack of diamonds
'toward dummy. West should
have clattered up with the ace
and trusted that his king of clubs
.'would provide the setting trick
Ibut West wasn't looking at all 52
cards and ducked.
; South proceeded to draw '
llrumps with three leads. He dis
carded his last two diamonds '
,on the king and queen of spades
land led the nine of clubs. He
jintended to let it rid, but East
covered with the jack and South's !
queen lost to West's king. .
; West led (lie ace of diamonds.
South ruffed, entered dummy1
with tlie last trump, discarded ,
the five of clubs on the last l
diamond and made his slam by l
finessing successfully a g a i n s 1 1
West s ten of clubs.
Why did this play give South '
that extra chance? Because no
mailer now we aejenso went
touth always would make his
contract if the king of clubs was 1
n the East hand,
