Eddie Butler To Give
Benefit Organ Concert
To benefit the Air Force Aid
Society, the Kingsley Field Of
licers' Wives' Club is sponsoring
an organ concert byiddie But
ler Sunday 2:30 p.m. Aug. 23,
at the Kinglsey Field Theater.
The public is invited, as well
as Air Force personnel and their
dependents.
Such selections as Gershwin's
"Rhapsody in Blue," "Clair de
Lune," and a medley of Viennese
waltzes are to be part of the
program.
Tickets are available at the
Derby Music Company, First Fed
eral Savings' and Loan and the
Klamath County Chamber of Com
merce and will go on sale at the
Base Commissary Aug. 14 and
IS and at the Base Exchange
Aug. 15.
All proceeds from the concert
will go to the Air Force Aid So
ciety, which is concerned with
the welfare of Air Force person
nel and their dependents.
The society assists Air Force
personnel whenever the American
National Red Cross and other
welfare agencies are unable to
offer their services. It operates
on funds received from its an
nual membership drive and vol
untary contributions from serv
ice personnel and civilians.
iButler, volunteering to present
this benefit concert for the Air
Force Aid Society, has played the
two largest organs In the world
during concerts at Atlantic City's
Convention Hall and at Philadel
phia's Wanamaker Department
Store.
Beginning his study of piano
at the age of 4 and organ at
7, he became a member of the
American Guild of Organists at
14, then the youngest person to
join the guild.
Butler said he has been Invited
to give sacred concerts in St. Pe
ter's Basilica, Rome, and in the
Cathedral of Our Lady of Guada
lupe, Mexico City.
Benny Goodman began his mu
sical career with orchestras on
lake Michigan excursion boats,

the Year.

niece. Betsy was!
a beautiful, bright-eyed darling
witn gowen curls. Last week when
we saw her at a family picnic she
was full of fun and laughter. Ev
eryone adored her.
Today Betsy is dead because
her mother left a bottle of pills in
the medicine cabinet. The little
girl, thinking the pills were candy,
ata every last one of them. My
sister-in-law found Betsy lying un
conscious on the floor and rushed
her to the hospital but it was too
late.
It is heartbreaking to lose a
child through illness, but to lose
a child because of carelessness Is
too much to bear. Please print this

Reds Still In
Moon Race
MOSCOW iUPD The Soviet
Union Monday marked the first
anniversary of the first group
space flight with indications it still
is shooting for the moon.
Reports published abroad have
said the Russians would like to
withdraw from the race to the
moon, which the United States
hopes to reach with a manned-
flight by 1970.
Official Soviet sources here,
however, have given no indication
the Kremlin intends to lessen its
efforts in the space race.

the Soviet space program in con
nection with the dual flight a year
ago of Maj. Andrian Nikolayev
and Lt. Col. Pavel Popovich.
lt was on Aug. 12, 1962, that
Popovich was launched into a

fore. The two cosmonauts, accom
plishing the world's first tandem
space flight, both landed Aug.

A second Soviet group space
flight was achieved last June by
Valery Bykovsky and Valentina
Tcreshkova, the world's pioneer

ords for duration and distance in

near Lake of the Woods. The serv
ice said all of them were caused
by picnickers and campers.
Blueprints and specifications
are now being drawn up to per
mit manufacture of the new flags.
They will be sent to VA field
stations, to post oil ices and to
embassies and consulates in for
eign countries for issuance at
the time of a veteran's death.
However, there are more than
100,000 of the older, larger flags
already on hand at depots and
the above distribution points.
These older flags will continue to
be issued until the supply is ex
hausted. This will depend entirely
upon the local situation in each
case, but VA officials estimate it
will not be until October - No
vember that the newer, smaller
lags begin to be used.
At the present time, about 15,000
flags are being issued each month.
During the past 12 years requests
for flags hae increased from 81,
000 annually to more than 170,000.
Guam, Puerto Rico and the
Philippines were ceded to the
U.S. by Spain under the Treaty
of Paris in 1898.

Police Mascot
Dies In Bowl
The reign of Oscar as official
mascot of the Oregon State Po
lice at Klamath Falls ended last
Friday when the six-inch long
catfish died in its gold fish bowl
in the police photo lab.
Oscar was discovered on the
floor of a pickup truck hy State
Police Officer Uury Beigmann
several years ago and was taken
to the lab and placed in a gradu
ate filled with water. The cat
fish revived and was later trans
ferred to the fish bowl where it
thrived on shrimp and other spe
cial loods until Friday.

heat when you're on the road
