day over Happy Camp and also
wrapped up the league title (or

Going into the Sunday clash at
Happy Camp, the Medo-Bcls had
been deadlocked with Weed (or
Die league crown. Weed (ell vic
tim to an aroused Mount Shasta
team that won only its second
game Sunday by knocking Weed
out of the leadership 3 to 1 and
.handing it to the Medo-Bels,
The victory was the eighth and
10 conference outings for the
Medo-Bels. With Griggs dealing up
base hils like a miser giving
away gold, the Medo-Bels put on

their hitting shoes and belled out
15 hits which they fashioned into
Iwo runs in the opening inning,
three each in the fourth and fifth
and one each in the seventh and
eighth.
Until the leadoff hitter in the
seventh. Griggs had a no-hitter
game going for him. and over the
first six innings had faced only
19 men, just one more than the
hare essential. In the first six
he had chalked up five strike
outs allowing only three base-runners.
In the seventh, though, Joe
Ragsdale greeted him w ith a sol
id single, followed by Chuck Sut
cliffe who also hit safely but both
men were tossed out in a neat
double play that began with ten-
tcrtield John Biancho to third
baseman Dean "Dunson to nail
Ragsdale, then back to Irv Whitt
at second to catch Sutcliffe. Tony
Mollish grounded out to end the
inning and the threat.
The only other hit off Griggs
came in the boolom of tlie ninth
when Happy Camp tried to get
a lame-duck rally going. Ted
Beck, first hitter, became Grigg's
seventh strikeout victim. Mike
Fitzgerald, Happy Camp short
stop, belted a single, the third and
last hit for the host club. Ho
reached second on an error. Rags
dale walked, but was thrown out
at second and Sutcliffe popped
up to end the game.
Tony Sellari and Dunson head
ed the bat parade for the Medo
Bels. Sellari belting three hits
in five trips, one a double, and
Dunson collecting three singles
in four official trips.
Sherm Allen accounted for
three HBIs and a pair of singles.
He also was credited with two
stolen bases. Sellari's double was
the enly extra-base clout of the
game.
Hi Hatfield indicated Monday
that the Medo-Bels had entered
the regional and semi-pro tour
nament scheduled for Bcllingham.
Wash , this coming weekend.
They will play a benefit game
Wednesday night at Gem Stadi
um against Weed, the club they
nosed out for tlie league title,
in an attempt to raise funds to
send the ekib to Bcllingham.
The Medo-Bels will leave early
Thursday morning and are sched
uled for their first tourney clash
at 9 a.m. Friday.
Hatfield stated that the North
ern California League President
Cup Playoffs would not start un
til Aug. 25. On that date,' Scott
Vallev, the No. 3 finisher in the
league, will come here to play
the Medo-Bels, and Dunsmuir will
tangle with second-place Weed,
there.
Last year, Weed won the regu
lar season crown, but the Medo
Bels came on to capture the
President's Cup playolls.

Hickey unveiled his "new" foot
ball machine in Portland Satur
day night as a seven-point favor
ite over the Minnesota Vikings
But only superhuman efforts by
Kermit Alexander and Elbert
Kimbrough kept the Norsemen
from burying the contraption
right there in the sod of Multno
mah Stadium.
The Minnesota team, which had
lost six straight games to San
Francisco, walloped the Forty
Niners 43-28 in the opening exhi
bition contest for both teams.
Only one-man offensive and de
fensive performances by Alexan
der and Kimbrough. respective
ly, kept the score from matching
the lop-sided statistics.
Dazzling Debut
The Vikings took a 3-0 lead in
the first period but Alexander, a
rookie from UCLA, electrified
20,837 fans in the second period
when he fielded a Minnesota field
goal attempt and raced 95 yards
for a touchdown in his first ball-
handling performance as a pro.
The Minnesota team bounced
ight back with a field goal and
n touchdown as Viking quarter
back Fran Tarkenton picked the
Forty Miner defense to pieces
Kimbrough broke up several long
pass attempts with an outstand
ing defensive job. but he couldn't
cover the whole field.
The Forty .Niner offense final
ly got rolling just belore the half
ended, when Alexander scam
pered 27 yards, quarterback John
Brodie hit Monte Stickles for 41,
and fullback Roy Winston
plunged over from the one.
But the Vikings came back
again, scoring 10 points on a
touchdown and a field goal in the
final 38 seconds of the half.
Alexander Again
Early in the third period. Al
exander exploded again. He took
Minnesota punt, fumbled it
briefly, and then rolled 81 yards
down the middle to score.
That made the score 23-21. but
it didn't scare the Vikings. Tar
kenton hit on a 65 yard scoring
pass two minutes later, and Min
nesota quickly added a field goal
liter the Forty Niners fumbled
the kickoff in the opening mo
ments of the fourth period.
The Forty Niner offense sput
tered again, and the Vikings
moved the ball into position for
their fifth field goal of the night
to lead 36-21 with seven minutes
remaining.
With a comfortable lead, the
Viking defense relaxed a bit and
the Forty Niner offense got an
other chance to look good. Bro

son, and Winston plunged over
from one foot out
But then Bob Reed capped a
fine Minnesota showing by taking
the Forty Niner kickoff and lop
ing 98 yards into paydirt.
The statistics told the story,
with Minnesota leading in every
department: Yards rushing, 243
to 74; yards passing, 226 to 174;
first downs, 24 to 13; total of
fense. 443 to 278.
Hickey was confident that his
team would look better against
the St. Louis Cardinals Friday at
Salt Lake City. That's a pretty
safe assumption because they

director at the University of
Georgia has testified under oath
that he never gave important
football secrets to Alabama
Coach Paul (Bean Bryant prior
to last fall's game between the
two schools.
The Saturday Evening Post, in
an article last March, claimed
lhat the information helped Ala
bama in its 35-0 defeat of the
Georgia Bulldogs.
Bulls, who resigned his post as
athletic director shortly before
the article was printed, sued the
Post, asking $5 million in general
and $5 million in punitive dam
ages as result of the story.
He charged in tlie suit that the
magazine had ruined his career
and spoiled his reputation that
had won for him a number of
honors, including the presidency
of the Football Coaches Associa
tion, a national organization of
college coaches.
Butts was expected to be asked
t o d a y. on cross - examination
more details of his avowed friend
ship with Frank Scobey, a Chica
go beer distributor who has told
the Senate rackets committee
that he made big bets on horse
racing and football games with
an Indiana gambling syndicate.
Scobey was not called as a wit
ness during five days of testi
mony last week but his sealed
deposition is on file in the case
and could be entered into testi
mony
Butts testified Friday that Sen
bey had helped him get a $6,000
loan from a Chicago bank and
had paid part of his bills on a
trip to New York but that he
never knew Scobey gambled.
Butts' testimony that he never
consoiiod to rig last fall's Ala
bama-Georgia game was followed
by an earlier denial by Bryant,
who a!so has sue) the Post.
